DLC roundup: Police Simulator – Patrol Officers, Crime Boss: Rockay City & Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun

It’s “lengthy title day” today, as we look at three new DLC releases that add new content to games you may already be familiar with. Here’s a look at Police Simulator: Patrol Officers – Highway Expansion, Crime Boss: Rockay City: Cagnali’s Order and Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun – Forges Of Corruption.

Police Simulator: Patrol Officers – Highway Expansion review (PS5)

The Highway Patrol Expansion expansion for Police Simulator: Patrol Officers, developed by Aesir Interactive and published by Astragon Entertainment, enriches the game’s experience by introducing a new patrol area on the highway that connects Brighton to the State of Franklin. This new DLC, which we reviewed with the PS5 version, offers players dynamic gameplay through high-speed chases, tactical maneuvers, and new tools like spike strips and roadblocks.

The expansion enhances the gameplay of the base game (which launched in 2022) by adding new tasks such as monitoring speeders, assisting stranded drivers, and checking suspicious cargo trucks. The inclusion of highway chases adds a layer of excitement, and the newly introduced Interstate Police Vehicle is a good addition to the car roster. However, despite the new content, the gameplay can feel repetitive, so don’t expect the next Need for Speed: Most Wanted.

Visually, the highway environment is well-crafted, and it provides a refreshing change from the city streets of Brighton in the base game. The expanded map offers more variety and space to explore, though the execution retains the quirks and bugs that “simulator” games typically have. The audio design remains immersive, effectively capturing the tension and atmosphere of police work on the highways.

Overall, the Highway Patrol Expansion adds meaningful content to Police Simulator: Patrol Officers, offering both long-time fans and new players more diverse and engaging policing scenarios, albeit with some persistent technical issues. It’s fun to play, and the change of scenery is a welcome one.

Crime Boss: Rockay City – Cagnali’s Order review (PS5)

The Cagnali’s Order DLC for Crime Boss: Rockay City, developed by Ingame Studios and published by 505 Games, introduces an intense new storyline to the game where players must thwart the rise of Cagnali Industries. The arrival of the new content coincides with the launch of the Steam version of the game, and it showcases a big narrative shift as the game pits players against a formidable high-tech robot army.

The sci-fi twist to the narrative of this DLC is engaging, offering a new plotline inspired by 90s sci-fi themes. Players are tasked with infiltrating Cagnali’s HQ and engaging in street warfare, adding a layer of depth and excitement to the game. The introduction of new enemies, such as the Scudos Elite and playable robots, along with high-tech weapons like the Scudomnion, enhances the overall gameplay experience. The co-op heists, which allow friends to join in, further boost the multiplayer appeal of the game, though we mostly focused on the new story content.

Visually, the game continues to impress with its detailed environments and celebrity cameos – Rockay City is still a great game for those with nostalgia for the actors featured. The Cagnali’s Fortress and the sprawling urban battlefields are particularly well-designed, providing a detailed backdrop for the explosive action sequences. However, the DLC does have a few difficulty spikes challenging, and the AI can still be a bit iffy at times, which can disrupt the flow of gameplay.

The audio complements the game’s new theme well, with a soundtrack that boosts the tension and excitement of your missions. While Rockay City has received a lot of updates post-launch, Cagnali’s Order probably won’t change your mind about whether or not it’s your kind of game. However, if you enjoyed its unique and star-studded approach, then you’ll have a good time with it.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun – Forges Of Corruption Expansion review (PS5)

The Forges of Corruption DLC for Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, which was developed by Auroch Digital and published by Focus Entertainment, expands on the adrenaline-fueled action of the well-received base game that we reviewed earlier. The new campaign consists of five levels, each with distinct environments like the Graia Battlefields and Daemonic Forge, and despite all of them having a unique style they fit seamlessly with the game’s grim dark atmosphere.

On the gameplay front we can see the introduction of new enemies, such as the formidable Helbrute and the deadly Terminator (no, not that one), requiring players to adapt their strategies. The addition of new weapons, like the Multi-Melta and Missile Launcher, adds variety and depth to combat, making each encounter feel fresh and challenging. The DLC’s narrative is interesting as well, pushing players to stop the corruption that’s being caused through intense and adrenaline-filled sequences.

Visually, the new environments are detailed and immersive, capturing the dark essence of the Warhammer 40,000 universe like the base game did. The sound design, complemented by a fitting and energetic soundtrack, enhances the overall experience, in which the controls remain tight and responsive, ensuring that the gameplay stays just as smooth in this new expansion – even though it features a few difficulty spikes that can be challenging to content with.

Overall, Forges of Corruption successfully expands the Boltgun experience with its new content, offering new levels and challenges while retaining a familiar feel. While it may present a steep difficulty curve for some, it’s a solid addition for fans seeking more intense action and additional challenge from an already engaging title.
