Walkabout Grip-to-Putter II review

Mighty Coconut’s Walkabout Mini Golf has long been a favorite in the VR gaming community, offering a relaxing and enjoyable putt-putt experience – and we’ve featured the game and its DLC courses regularly. Recently, HelloReal collaborated with Mighty Coconut to bring players the Official Walkabout Grip-to-Putter II, a physical mini golf putter designed to enhance the Walkabout Mini Golf experience on platforms like the PlayStation 5 and Meta Quest. Developed to improve upon the design of the original, this accessory aims to bring the realism of a weighted putter shaft with the Walkabout’s grip-to-putt setting. We took the Quest version for a virtual spin around the golf course.

The Walkabout Grip-to-Putter II impressively mimics the feel of a real mini golf putter, providing a satisfying grip, momentum, weight, and balance that standard controllers lack. It’s a well-crafted accessory that adds a layer of immersion to the gameplay, especially if you’re used to just playing with the regular Touch controllers. Speaking of which, however, it might take a while to trust that your controller is safe at the end of the putter as you’re not physically touching it anymore and can’t see it either, but within a round of golf we had forgotten about that.

One thing that’s really nice about the Grip-To-Putter II is that it significantly improves the sense of control you have – thus making you more consistent while playing, with less margin for error than when playing with the Touch controllers in your hand. The custom-designed controller attachment, adorned with a Walkabout-themed textured grip for this new version, contributes to the overall feel of the game. The compatibility with different controllers is a plus, allowing users to switch out grips and adapters easily if you’re using multiple Quest iterations.

However, while the actual putting itself is great, the simplified controls do mean that you have to turn the putting upside down in order to access the other controls and stick for a lot of things. Unless you’re playing in a large space where physically walking around goes a long way, that can be a bit immersion-breaking – though by working together with the Walkabout devs they’ve done an admirable job making this as seamless as possible.

The Walkabout Grip-to-Putter II is a quality upgrade for those who enjoy Walkabout Mini Golf (and games like it), but it’s also a serious upgrade in terms of price. Don’t consider this the type of attachment that you’d get for your Switch controller for a bit of casual fun – this is a solid choice for avid Walkabout Mini Golf enthusiasts looking to elevate their gaming experience. It’s a well-crafted accessory that delivers on its promise of enhancing immersion, albeit with a few minor inconveniences. If you’re a Walkabout fan like we are, then the Walkabout Grip-to-Putter II may just be the right swing for you.
