Oxenfree II: Lost Signals review (PS4)

Oxenfree II: Lost Signals, developed by Night School Studio and published by Netflix, is a captivating narrative adventure that immerses players into a world of unnaturally occurring electromagnetic waves and eerie occurrences in the small coastal town of Camena. The game follows the journey of Riley Poverly, an adventurous young woman who returns to her hometown to investigate the mysteries surrounding the peculiar disturbances. It’s available for most major systems, and even for Netflix subscribers – we checked out the PlayStation 4 version.

The game’s premise allows players to shape the story through their choices, and it excels in seamlessly blending an explorative narrative adventure with a mind-bending quest to stop a paranormal cult known as The Parentage. Players are introduced to Riley’s interactions with her old high school friend Jacob as they embark on a quest to set up transmitters throughout Camena. The narrative starts pleasantly enough, but it gradually pulls players into a web of mystery and the occult, creating a sense of intrigue that lingers throughout the game.

One of the highlights of Oxenfree II is its well-developed cast of characters and the organic conversations between them. The relationship between Riley and Jacob evolves naturally as players make choices, and their interactions reflect the decisions made, impacting the story and the characters’ reactions. The eerie atmosphere is effectively built through haunting melodies and unsettling sound design, perfectly complementing the game’s underlying air of mystery.

The walkie-talkie conversation system plays a significant role in the gameplay, allowing players to interact with various characters and listen to live radio broadcasts. The puzzles, revolving around radio frequencies and interdimensional portals, present intriguing challenges without becoming overly frustrating. Climbing equipment adds depth to traversal, and the inclusion of secret collectible letters encourages exploration, providing more insight into Camena’s past.

The game’s visuals employ a pixel-art style that captures the essence of a ’90s sidescroller, enhancing the atmospheric charm. The hauntingly beautiful landscapes and haunting visuals create an immersive experience, amplified by the chilling soundtrack that perfectly complements the narrative’s eerie undertones. But while Oxenfree II delivers an audiovisually engaging experience, some players might find it slow-paced and initially distant due to the unfamiliarity of the characters and the story’s gradual unfolding.

Oxenfree II: Lost Signals lives up to its predecessor’s reputation, surpassing it in some aspects with its sharpened horror elements and inventive storytelling. It manages to create a unique and memorable gaming experience that weaves together supernatural elements, interpersonal relationships, and choice-driven gameplay. While it might not be everyone’s preferred genre, those who appreciate a thought-provoking, slower-paced adventure will find Oxenfree II to be a hauntingly evocative journey of mystery and intrigue that’s not to be missed.

Score: 8.2/10
