NBA 2K24 review (PS5)

NBA 2K24, the latest installment in the long-running series from Visual Concepts, aims to refresh the franchise with new gameplay tweaks and updates across various game modes. It still offers an immersive core experience as well, allowing players to step into the shoes of their favorite NBA teams and players throughout history – here’s our take on the PlayStation 5 version.

The standout feature in NBA 2K24 is the introduction of ProPLAY technology, a significant advancement in capturing real-life movements on the court. This results in a more authentic and fluid gameplay experience, where players move with a natural grace reminiscent of their real-world counterparts. It’s a commendable step forward, ensuring that each play feels genuine and engaging.

However, this heightened realism comes at the cost of pacing, as the gameplay is noticeably slower than it’s been in the past. Players looking for a more arcade-style gameplay approach will find that 2K24 gives way to a more deliberate and tactical approach. But while this shift may disappoint some, it aligns with the game’s focus on realism quite well.

The MyCAREER mode takes center stage, offering players a deep and personalized journey through the world of professional basketball. The City, the hub of MyCAREER, provides a vibrant backdrop with various activities and quests. But although The City has seen improvements from its previous iteration, it still falls a little short of being an inviting and visually engaging environment. On the plus side, a notable change in MyCAREER is the shift from the underdog narrative to that of an up-and-coming superstar. This refreshes the storyline, offering players a new perspective on the pressures and expectations that come with (impending) stardom.

MyTEAM, the card-collecting mode, has received a few updates as well, including a salary cap mode that adds a layer of strategy to team-building. However, the heavy emphasis on microtransactions remains a downside, potentially overshadowing the satisfaction of grinding for player cards and pretty much ruining the experience for those who don’t want to spend additional real life money on the game post-purchase.

The addition of Mamba Moments pays tribute to the late Kobe Bryant, allowing players to relive some of his most iconic performances. But while these moments are enjoyable, the absence of certain legendary milestones, like Kobe’s 81-point game that even casual fans will remember, leaves room for improvement.

The inclusion of the WNBA in The W and MyWNBA modes is a positive step towards inclusivity. However, these modes feel less fleshed out compared to their NBA counterparts, potentially missing an opportunity to promote women’s basketball more prominently.

NBA 2K24 offers revamped gameplay through ProPLAY and introduces worthwhile tweaks to various game modes. But despite its strengths, the game grapples with persistent issues, notably the heavy reliance on in-game currency (VC) and microtransactions. These elements may hinder the overall experience, and will keep many playing from enjoying everything the game has to offer. So while NBA 2K24 excels in capturing the essence of professional basketball, it still has room for growth in addressing these ongoing concerns – but we’re hoping that the refinements on the court are the start of a positive trajectory for the franchise.
