Virgo Versus The Zodiac review (PS5)

In Moonana’s Virgo Versus the Zodiac, players are catapulted into a bizarre version of the Milky Way, where the twelve Zodiacs have assumed control of their respective realms. As the formidable Virgo, players embark on a cosmic quest to reclaim the crowns of the other Zodiacs, with the ambition of ushering in a new Golden Age. The game is a blend of sci-fi and fantasy, drawing inspiration from 16-bit RPG classics. It’s been out on PC for a while, but is now available on consoles as well – we played it on a PlayStation 5.

The premise of the game is nothing short of intriguing. Virgo’s journey is not a straightforward tale of heroism; instead, it navigates a morally ambiguous landscape. The game delves into the nature of power, presenting a universe where every character, including Virgo herself, is caught in a web of complex motives and beliefs. The Zodiacs’ realms, each a reflection of their respective sign’s traits, serve as thought-provoking backdrops to this cosmic drama.

One of the game’s standout features is its combat system. Embracing turn-based mechanics but with real-time execution, players must carefully time their moves, forcing them to strike a delicate balance between offense and defense. The inclusion of a “Purity bar” adds an additional layer of strategy, providing both a shield and an opportunity for counterattacks. The combat system seamlessly integrates real-time inputs, adding an engaging layer of interactivity and pace to battles.

Virgo Versus the Zodiac also introduces a unique leveling system, with character skills being determined by equipment. This offers a twist to traditional RPG progression, allowing for a tailored approach to character development. The game’s three astrological qualities – Mutable, Fixed, and Cardinal – further enrich the combat experience, creating a dynamic interplay between attributes and tactics across several axes.

Exploration is another key aspect of the game, which through it campaign offers multiple endings and a wealth of interactions with interesting NPCs that shape the player’s journey along the way. The Zodiac Memories provide a deeper understanding of the game’s rich lore, adding depth to the narrative.

While the game’s combat and progression systems are commendable, there are some minor quirks. The game’s controls, while functional, take a little while to get used to, especially when using characters that have unique action buttons assigned to them. Additionally, managing equipment, while crucial, can start to feel a bit like busywork in the later stages of the game.

Visually, Virgo Versus the Zodiac excels with its charming pixel art style. The Zodiac realms are intricately designed, showcasing a meticulous attention to detail. Character animations are delightful as well, and the screenshots don’t really do the game justice. The soundtrack also stands out as a highlight, offering a diverse range of compositions that complement the game’s pace and atmospheres. From moody synth tracks to catchy melodies, the music adds a layer of immersion that resonates throughout the journey.

In summary, Virgo Versus the Zodiac is a stellar addition to the RPG genre. Its thought-provoking narrative, engaging combat, and distinctive art style contribute to a captivating cosmic adventure. While some aspects may benefit from minor refinements, the game’s strengths far outweigh any minor quibbles. For players seeking a unique and immersive RPG experience, Virgo Versus the Zodiac is an easy recommendation and we’re glad to see it on consoles.
