Heavy Duty Challenge: The Off-Road Truck Simulator, a collaborative effort between developer Nano Games and publisher Aerosoft, invites players to embark on a rugged journey through the challenging world of off-road trials. Set against the backdrop of authentic real-life locations, the game aims to offer a unique and immersive simulation experience. There are similarities with games like Overpass and Mudrunner, but this one’s for the purists who prefer leaning into the sim end of things. We tried it out on a PlayStation 5.
We’ve actually had our eye on this one for a few years now, having first met with the developers during a pandemic-era online event and then later during the 2022 edition of Gamescom, there they had set up a version of the game with a full simulator. Now the game is finally out, and with modding support and an in-game level editor, players are granted a canvas for customization and creativity, letting them create their own challenges.

One important aspect here is the official license from the Europa Truck Trial league, granting access to a diverse fleet of 12 intricately detailed trucks, complete with interactive cabin views and compatibility with both wheel and gamepad controls. However, Heavy Duty Challenge encounters stumbling blocks in certain crucial aspects. The deliberate and slow pacing of off-road trials may not resonate with every player, potentially confining its appeal to a particular audience that doesn’t mind a methodical and slower-paced experience where every little correction can make or break your run.
Graphically, the game falls a little shy of expectations, and doesn’t feel like it challenges the PS5 too much. There also seem to be a few camera angles that just don’t work well for a game of this type – obscuring too much of the view to be able to tackle the difficult challenges ahead of you. The view from behind the wheel is very challenging as well, but at least that’s very immersive and good indicator for how difficult this must be in real life.

Heavy Duty Challenge excels in its meticulous attention to detail. The game’s faithful representation of truck mechanics and its extensive selection of licensed trucks contribute to a good sense of immersion, especially from within the interior of the truck. Players can genuinely feel the heft and power of these colossal machines through interactive cabin views, and those with a sim/steering wheel setup will enjoy using it for this one.. However, the game’s emphasis on authenticity might limit its broader appeal, potentially alienating players seeking a more carefree and fast-paced adventure. Those players are probably better off waiting for something like Overpass 2.
To broaden its reach, Heavy Duty Challenge could benefit from the inclusion of a more casual mode, providing an alternative experience for players in pursuit of a less demanding and more accessible ride. As it stands, the game predominantly caters to simulation enthusiasts hungry for an authentic off-road truck trial experience – and the huge level of challenge that comes with that. While it succeeds in simulating this respect, it falls slightly short of delivering the heart-pounding excitement that could potentially draw a wider player base. Heavy Duty Challenge provides a genuine foray into the world of off-road truck trials, but its deliberate pace and high level of challenge may leave some players longing for a smoother ride. With a few adjustments, this title has the potential to strike a balance that appeals to both simulation enthusiasts and a broader gaming audience.
