Fast X review (4K)

Fast X, the latest installment in the Fast & Furious franchise (and part one of a two-part story), races onto home screens with all the flair and intensity fans have come to expect. Directed by Louis Leterrier and featuring a star-studded ensemble cast, including Jason Momoa as the over-the-top antagonist Dante Reyes, the film is another high-octane ride filled with jaw-dropping action sequences and a healthy dose of family dynamics. We checked it out on a 4K disc.

Fast X takes off from the explosive events of the previous films, propelling Dominic Toretto and his crew into a relentless battle against Dante Reyes, a vengeful force seeking retribution after the death of his father (earlier on in the series). Jason Momoa’s portrayal of Dante is nothing short of mad and maniacal, evoking comparisons to iconic antagonists like The Joker. Momoa’s performance breathes life into the character, making him one of the standout elements of the film – for better or for worse, depending on how you take to the over-the-top persona of his character.

The 4K Ultra HD presentation of Fast X with Dolby Vision is a visual triumph, delivering stunning clarity and vivid colors. The film’s global escapades, from the bustling streets of Rome to the icy landscapes of Antarctica, are captured with breathtaking detail. The film’s cinematography, captured at 2160p, showcases vibrant colors and a wide color gamut (WCG). This results in lush and vivid imagery, making natural elements pop in Los Angeles scenes, while exotic locations like Rome come to life with dynamic and vibrant colors. The Dolby Vision enhancement particularly shines in lower-lit sequences, bringing out nuanced colors with exceptional clarity.

Importantly, the video presentation is free from common issues like banding, aliasing, or excessive video noise. This indicates a high-quality transfer and ensures a smooth and immersive viewing experience.

The Dolby Atmos audio track intensifies the experience, immersing viewers in a sensory whirlwind of revving engines, thundering explosions, and resonant gunshots. The mix utilizes a three-dimensional soundstage, creating an encompassing audio environment. This is especially evident in action sequences, where the sound effects are finely balanced and coordinated with the on-screen action.

Engines roaring, gunfire, and explosions are delivered with precision, creating a realistic and impactful auditory experience. The audio mix ensures that each element, from engine revs to explosions, is distinct and accurately positioned within the surround sound field. This level of detail and spatial awareness contributes to a heightened sense of immersion for the viewer, and the Dolby Atmos track extends to the height speakers very well. This allows for elements like debris falling from the sky or rain to be effectively rendered, enhancing the vertical dimension of the audio experience. This release is a true audiovisual showcase of the potential of modern home entertainment systems.

Fast X doesn’t skimp on bonus content. The included special features offer an in-depth look behind the scenes, providing valuable insights into the making of this adrenaline-fueled spectacle. From director commentary to featurettes exploring various aspects of the production, the extras contribute to a well-rounded viewing experience.

While undeniably entertaining, the film isn’t without its flaws. Some new characters feel superfluous, disrupting the established dynamic of the ensemble. However, the film’s ability to balance its absurdity with genuine emotional beats and the undeniable chemistry of the cast keeps it on track – though it’s hard to ignore the fact that we’ve already had more than a dozen of these now.

Fast X may not be a cinematic masterpiece in the traditional sense, but it’s undeniably a thrilling rollercoaster ride. The combination of jaw-dropping action, charismatic performances, and top-notch audio-visual quality makes it a fun watch – especially with a great home entertainment setup. Fast X is an exhilarating experience that delivers on its promise of high-octane entertainment, and we look forward to the next installment – due in 2025!
