Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is the latest installment in the long-running and acclaimed Granblue series of fighting games, developed by Arc System Works in collaboration with Cygames. It builds upon the foundation of its predecessor, offering both a comprehensive package for existing fans and an inviting entry point for newcomers. We tried it out on a PlayStation 5.
The game’s storyline, which presented in a visual novel format that fits seamlessly with the visual style of the action itself, unfolds across three acts, with the first act being a complete retelling of the original story that makes it interesting for veterans as well. Acts 2 and 3 introduce fresh narratives as well, seamlessly integrating DLC characters from the prior game into the main story. And while the narrative might not be groundbreaking, it provides an engaging backdrop to the fighting action and is well delivered.

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising retains the core mechanics of the original Granblue Fantasy Versus, offering an accessible yet enjoyable fighting experience. The addition of the Raging Strike system introduces a new strategic layer, allowing players to break their opponent’s defense and initiate combos of their own. The controls have been refined for accessibility, making special moves more user-friendly, not too unlike how Street Fighter 6 deals with them. Each character retains their unique playstyle, ensuring a diverse and nuanced fighting roster – while a difficulty rating for each character helps newcomers to choose suitable fighters to start out with.
The game excels in both visual and auditory aspects, with Arc System Works’ signature anime-style graphics capturing the essence of the Granblue Fantasy universe – really popping off the screen on the PS5. Characters are vividly designed, set against detailed and lively backgrounds. The soundtrack, blending hard rock and orchestral compositions, complements the fantasy setting and intensifies the combat experience. If, like us, you’re a longtime fan of this style, then this is the best you’ve seen of it thus far.
One of the standout improvements in Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is the revamped online experience, which has been updated to modern standards. The introduction of rollback netcode significantly enhances online play, delivering a smoother experience with players from various regions. The Grand Bruise Legends mode introduces a novel and surprising party aspect to the game as well, though the longevity of this mode might be limited due to the repetitive nature of its mini-games.

The game includes an in-game store which offers various cosmetic items for purchase using in-game currency, creating an avenue for personalizing characters, avatars, and dioramas for those who enjoy those features. They’re all optional and entirely cosmetic in nature, but if you’re a completionist you’ll find that the grind for in-game currency can become a bit of a chore over time.
At the end of the day, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising emerges as a substantial upgrade over its predecessor. With an expanded character roster, improved netcode, and innovative game modes, it caters to fans of the original while maintaining accessibility for newcomers. The overall experience is a delightful blend of style, accessibility, and engaging combat, as these are exciting months for fighting game fans with Tekken 8 also on the horizon.
Score: 8.6/10
