Persona 3 Reload review (PS5)

Persona 3 Reload, the latest release of Atlus’ genre-defining series of RPGs, brings its tale of high school life intertwined with supernatural elements to modern audiences. Originally released on the PS2 and PSP, it’s a classic that was hard to reach for many of today’s Persona fans. And with updated graphics, refined mechanics, and an abundance of new content, Reload is a package that aims to please both veterans and newcomers alike. We played it on a PlayStation 5.

In Persona 3 Reload, players step into the shoes of a transfer student navigating the mysterious Dark Hour and balancing more or less ‘regular’ teenage life with shadow-hunting escapades. This sets the stage for a narrative that blends supernatural fantasy with relatable coming-of-age themes, which is a combination that is as strong today as it was when we first played Persona 3 on a PlayStation Portable almost a decade and a half ago.

In terms of gameplay, Persona 3 Reload introduces strategic enhancements like Baton Pass and Theurgy, adding depth and dynamism to the turn-based combat mechanics – improving upon the way that combat played out in the original. However, despite these improvements, combat can still feel repetitive over time, especially when compared to more modern takes on the turn-based RPG genre – including more recent Persona titles.

Visually, the game has received a significant overhaul with enhanced graphics and a stylish new UI design, which are both eye-catching right away. Fully voiced dialogue enriches the character interactions you have and emotional highs and lows of the story, contributing to an immersive experience reminiscent of later entries in the series and making this step back towards Persona 3 not feel like a big step back in time.

At the same time, Persona 3 Reload is not without its flaws. The omission of certain content, such as the option to play as a female protagonist and the chance to play through the additional chapter called “The Answer” will disappoint long-time fans looking for this to be the “ultimate” version of the game. Furthermore, the randomly generated nature of Tartarus’ designs and layouts can feel repetitive and lackluster compared to handcrafted dungeons.

Despite these shortcomings, Persona 3 Reload remains a captivating experience that captures the essence of its predecessor while offering new surprises for players to uncover, blending nostalgia with modernization. For fans of the later Persona games who never had a chance to play this one, that makes this an easy choice.

In conclusion, Persona 3 Reload stands as a worthy tribute to the original, delivering an engaging adventure that resonates with players old and new alike. Its heartfelt storytelling, memorable cast, and strategic gameplay ensure that it remains a standout entry in the Persona series.
