Expeditions: A MudRunner Game takes the renowned off-road simulation series in a bold new direction, delivering an new kind of adventure amidst rugged terrains and untamed wilderness in a variety of locations. Developed by Saber Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment, Expeditions builds on the franchise’s legacy, offering excellent physics-based gameplay that captures the essence of navigating through challenging landscapes. We’re checking out the PlayStation 5 version.
The game’s world is divided across a number of expansive open areas, ranging from arid deserts in Arizona to much more lush environments in the Carpathian mountains. And while that still sounds familiar to MudRunner players, Expeditions also invites players to embark on scientific expeditions in search of hidden treasures and forgotten ruins – adding a layer of narrative depth to the game. This new premise of the game introduces a refreshing twist, infusing intellectual mission briefings with the core gameplay mechanics that fans of the MudRunner series already know and love.
One of the game’s standout features is its advanced physics system, which brings the terrain to life with remarkable realism. Players must navigate treacherous mud sections, rocky terrain, and steep inclines, carefully managing their vehicles’ mechanics to overcome obstacles and complete missions. The attention to detail in vehicle dynamics, including suspension bounce and tire traction, adds depth to the driving experience and immerses players in the challenges of off-road exploration.

Expeditions also introduces a variety of high-tech tools and gadgets to aid players in their journey, from drones for reconnaissance to help you plan your approach (there are almost always multiple ways of tackling something) to metal detectors for uncovering hidden artifacts. These tools not only enhance gameplay but also contribute to the strategic depth of the experience, allowing players to adapt to the sometimes changing environment and conditions, and overcome obstacles with precision and skill.
The game offers a diverse selection of vehicles to take out into the field, ranging from more nimble scouts to rugged heavy-duty trucks, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. The inclusion of these different vehicles adds layers to the gameplay, requiring players to strategize and adapt to the terrain accordingly. Additionally, the meticulous attention to detail in vehicle design and environmental effects, such as tire marks in the mud and dynamic terrain deformation, further enhances the immersive experience.
Visually, Expeditions impresses with its beautiful environments and detailed vehicles, although occasional texture issues detract from the overall presentation – you’ll notice this in muddy sections in particular. The game’s lighting and environmental effects create immersive landscapes, though the lack of wildlife in these areas diminishes the sense of immersion in these vast and supposedly “untamed” wildernesses. Coming across some wildlife would have been a nice touch for sure, so hopefully we’ll see that added in at some point.

In terms of gameplay, Expeditions offers a challenging yet rewarding experience, with a steep learning curve for MudRunner newcomers that rewards patience and strategic thinking. While the game’s menus and UI may feel a tad bare bones at times, they serve their purpose in facilitating mission planning and vehicle customization, and never get in the way of the action.
Overall, Expeditions: A MudRunner Game delivers a very engaging off-road adventure that builds on the strengths of its predecessors while introducing new elements to the franchise that should make it appeal more to those looking for more than a “sim” type of experience. Despite some minor flaws, such as texture issues and limited wildlife, the game offers a compelling experience for fans of the series and newcomers alike. With its engaging gameplay mechanics, attractive visuals, and immersive environments, Expeditions is a worthy addition to the MudRunner franchise.
