Previously released for PSVR 2 and now available for the Meta Quest as well, C-Smash VRS is a standout VR title that pays homage to the niche SEGA classic Cosmic Smash while carving its own path in the VR realm. Developed by Wolf & Wood and published by RapidEyeMovers, this futuristic sports game brings the thrill of racket sports to life in a cosmic setting, offering a unique blend of gameplay mechanics and immersive visuals that feels like it was made for a tetherless VR headset.
Set in a minimalist yet visually striking space station, C-Smash VRS immediately draws players into its world, where the goal is simple: smash through transparent walls using a racket and ball. The gameplay mechanics, reminiscent of squash/racketball and Breakout, offer a familiar yet refreshing experience in VR. Each wall presents a different challenge, requiring strategic thinking and precise aiming to clear them efficiently. However, the physics of the virtual ball, while adding to the challenge, can sometimes feel unpredictable, especially when attempting to hit returning shots – indicating a bit of a learning curve.

One of the game’s strengths lies in its variety of game modes, providing something for every player. The “Journey” mode takes players on a galactic adventure, challenging them to levels within a set time limit. While this mode can be quite challenging and benefits greatly from having a room-scale setup, the addition of a “Zen” mode offers a more relaxed alternative. Additionally, the “Infinity” mode adds a new dimension to the gameplay, requiring players to dodge oncoming obstacles while smashing through walls—a different kind of experience that tests both skill and reflexes while offering a workout.
Visually, C-Smash VRS impresses with its minimalist aesthetic and attention to detail. The space station setting, complemented by colorful visuals and dynamic lighting, creates a sci-fi atmosphere that perfectly matches the game’s futuristic theme. The addition of fun elements like NPC astronauts floating in zero gravity adds to the immersion, making each play session feel like a journey through space.
Moreover, the game’s soundtrack, featuring original tracks from artists like DJ Ken Ishii and UNKLE, enhances the overall experience, immersing players in a world of fitting electronic beats and pulsating rhythms. The synergy between gameplay, visuals, and music creates a sense of immersion that keeps players engaged and entertained.

While C-Smash VRS shines in many aspects, it’s not without its flaws. The reliance on room-scale movement for optimal gameplay is going to be limiting for players with smaller play spaces, leading to potential frustration during intense moments – although the wirefree nature of the Quest is liberating when compared to the PSVR 2 version. Additionally, the time limits imposed in certain game modes, while adding a sense of urgency, can feel overly punishing, especially for those still mastering the game’s mechanics.
In conclusion, C-Smash VRS stands as a testament to the potential of VR gaming, offering a captivating blend of nostalgia, innovation, and immersive gameplay that could only work this well in a VR environment. And despite its minor shortcomings, the game’s strengths – such as its engaging mechanics, striking visuals, and pulsating soundtrack – make it a must-play title for VR enthusiasts seeking an exhilarating racket sports experience. Online play provides potential for e-sports enthusiasts, and C-Smash VRS has thus carved out a nice niche in the VR gaming landscape – and the more platforms it supports, the better. Performance on the Quest is great, and we loved playing it not attached to a cable.
