DLC Roundup: Planet Zoo, SteamWorld Build & Wartales

We’re returning to three titles we’ve previously reviewed today, as all three have recently received new DLC addons. Here’s a look at new content for Planet Zoo, SteamWorld Build and Wartales.

Planet Zoo – Barnyard Animal Pack review (PC)

The Barnyard Animal Pack DLC for Planet Zoo, developed by Frontier Developments, aims to bring the rustic charm of the countryside to the game. It introduces seven beloved animals that have lived alongside humans for centuries, along with over 60 traditional rustic scenery pieces and a new campaign scenario. A fairly typical animal pack then – so is it worth the investment?

The premise of this new DLC centers around the addition of domestic farm animals to players’ zoos, aiming to recreate the experience of a petting zoo – a common sight in many zoos even though it’s a departure from the game’s traditional focus on wild animals. We’re not sure the Alpine goat is the goat you’ll often see inside a petting zoo though, but we’ll let that slide.

As usual, the DLC offers high-quality animal models and while also introducing new guest interactions with animals, adding depth to the zoo management experience. The addition of rustic scenery pieces allows players to create charming rural environments as well, enhancing the overall ambiance of your new zoo environments.

Overall, the Barnyard Animal Pack DLC for Planet Zoo offers new content that should appeal to a lot of players looking to do something different with their zoo, though it might leave those with an affinity for wild animals a tad underwhelmed. We believe the DLC adds variety to the game, and expands the possibilities for creative zoo management.

SteamWorld Build Mechanized review (PS5)

The Mechanized DLC for SteamWorld Build, published by Thunderful and developed by The Station, introduces players to their new companion: the Mech. It’s a substantial addon with content that enhances the mining experience, transforming it into a challenging maze filled with both puzzles and threats.

The heart of the DLC revolves around the introduction of the Mech, a powerful ally equipped with lifting and punching abilities. Players must utilize the Mech’s capabilities to manipulate blocks, combat enemies, and navigate through the newly revamped mines. With each level featuring unique puzzles and a few threats, rushing in becomes a more challenging endeavor, requiring careful planning and strategy to overcome obstacles.

One of the DLC’s standout features is its overhaul of the mining mechanics, where the maps now feel larger and more complex, with intricate puzzles scattered throughout. The addition of new enemy attacks adds an element of surprise and danger, keeping players on their toes as they explore the depths of the mines. It’s a bit less laid back than the base game was, as the focus here shifts heavily towards mining and exploration.

Overall, the Mechanized DLC provides a compelling addition to SteamWorld Build, offering players a more interactive and challenging mining experience. With its introduction of new gameplay mechanics, puzzles, and enemies, the DLC breathes new life into the game, enticing both new and existing players to embark on underground adventures.

Wartales: The Tavern Opens! review (PC)

The Tavern Opens! DLC for Wartales, developed by Shiro Games, introduces players to the management and simulation aspect of running their own tavern within the game world. It offers a new layer of gameplay that allows players to manage and expand their establishment while taking a break from their regular type of adventures.

The core of The Tavern Opens revolves around players managing their tavern, hiring staff, crafting menus, and satisfying the needs of their customers. And while a lot of players may appreciate the addition of this new and refreshing gameplay element, others may find it a weird fit with what they’re used to.

The tavern management mechanics actually have a surprising amount of depth, almost like a fully featured game within Wartales itself. The ability to recruit staff, customize the layout of the tavern, and earn passive income through resting adds depth to the overall gameplay experience. Having said that, it’s a tad too easy to generate income and progress through the game. Combined with a few bugs, it feels like there’s some polish missing here.

Despite this, the Tavern Opens! DLC offers a refreshing change of pace for players looking for a break from the main gameplay loop of Wartales. It adds variety to the game world and provides an additional source of income for players to manage. It may not be perfect, but this DLC offers an enjoyable diversion for players who want to experience a different genre within the world of Wartales. With an accessible price point, it’s certainly worth considering for fans of the game looking to expand their experience.
