Armed and Gelatinous – Couch Edition review (PS5)

Armed and Gelatinous: Couch Edition is a new multiplayer-centric release that propels players into an intergalactic showdown, inviting friends and family to engage in a cosmic brawl filled with fast-paced action and customizable mayhem. Developed by Three Flip Studios, this multiplayer party game offers a plethora of fully customizable battle modes, with lethal weaponry and sports-inspired minigames. We checked it out on a PlayStation 5.

The premise of Armed and Gelatinous: Couch Edition is simple enough, drawing players into a world where blobs battle it out in space as they growing in size and firepower with each weapon they collect. As players dash around the vibrant 2D play space, they must strategically grab weapons to bolster their arsenal while avoiding becoming an easy target for opponents. The game’s variety of modes, including classics like Death Match but also Blob Soccer and Blob Bombardment, provide diverse gameplay experiences that cater to different playstyles and preferences.

Positive elements shine through in the game’s emphasis on local multiplayer, fostering opportunities for shared experiences and competitive fun among friends gathered around the same screen. The nostalgia of couch co-op gaming is palpable, evoking memories of late-night gaming sessions with friends, so it’s no surprise to see “couch edition” tacked on to the title here.

However, Armed and Gelatinous: Couch Edition does have its drawbacks. The absence of online multiplayer limits the accessibility of the game, requiring players to have friends physically present to fully enjoy the experience. While that’s our preferred way of playing together, we also realize many today only get their multiplayer fix on the web. Additionally, the core gameplay mechanics, while enjoyable, may feel repetitive after extended play sessions, lacking the depth and variety found in some other multiplayer/partygame titles.

Visually, the game boasts colorful and dynamic visuals, complemented by a lively soundtrack featuring tracks from various artists. The art style captures the whimsical nature of the game, enhancing the overall ‘fun-focused’ atmosphere and immersion factor of Armed and Gelatinous.

In conclusion, Armed and Gelatinous: Couch Edition offers a refreshing take on local multiplayer gaming, delivering entertaining gameplay experiences for those seeking lighthearted fun with friends. While its lack of online multiplayer and potential for repetitive gameplay may deter some players, the game’s charm and accessibility make it a worthwhile addition to any party game lineup on the PlayStation 5 platform.
