Frogun Encore, developed by Molegato and published by Top Hat Studios, is an expansion and follow-up to the indie hit Frogun. It’s a standalone release, and it brings back the lovable protagonist Renata, along with new characters and enhanced gameplay mechanics. It’s out on all major systems including the PlayStation 5, and its low-poly aesthetic and fun platforming should please both returning fans and new players.
Set three years after the adventures of the original Frogus, Encore thrusts Renata back into action when Beelzebub’s loyal followers threaten the hard-earned peace once more. Accompanied by Jake and Hatter, Renata embarks on a globe-trotting journey to stop their villainous schemes. The narrative is simple yet charming, providing a solid backdrop for the platforming escapades. It’s infused with a lighthearted tone, complementing the game’s whimsical world.
Building on the original’s foundation, Frogun Encore’s gameplay introduces a host of new movements, including double jumps, sling catapults, and toss jumps, adding layers of complexity and fun to the platforming experience – which feels more mature this time around. The gameplay feels fluid and intuitive, with the trusty Frogun serving as both a tool and a weapon. Using it, players will find themselves swinging on ledges, grappling across gaps, and using it in even more creative ways to solve puzzles and defeat enemies.

The game also shines in its level design, which features colorful, diverse environments filled with secrets and collectibles. The expanded movement options allow for more dynamic exploration, encouraging players to master advanced techniques to uncover hidden areas and shortcuts – strengthening the game’s lasting appeal in the process as there’s more to do and discover.
What’s also worth mentioning is Frogun Encore’s couch co-op mode. Jake can join Renata at any time, allowing for cooperative exploration and problem-solving. This addition significantly enhances the gameplay experience, making it a perfect choice for playing with friends or family and a rare one in the platformer genre. The controls are responsive and easy to pick up as well, ensuring that both new players and seasoned platforming veterans can enjoy the game without frustration, even side by side.
Visually, Frogun Encore maintains the charming low-poly aesthetic of its predecessor. The graphics, while simple, are polished and contribute to the game’s nostalgic feel. The audio design complements the visuals well, featuring a catchy soundtrack and sound effects that enhance the overall experience. However, some might find the visuals a bit too simplistic compared to modern platformers (Ratchet & Clank this is not), though this is largely a matter of personal preference and retro enthusiasts will find little to complain about and lots to embrace.

At the end of the day, Frogun Encore excels with its engaging gameplay, charming visuals, and delightful co-op mode. The expanded movement mechanics and well-designed levels provide a more than solid platforming experience that encourages exploration and replayability, while the narrative serves its purpose and keeps the adventure light and enjoyable.
On the downside, the controls can feel a tad awkward when trying to pull off some of the more advanced maneuvers, but low-poly aesthetic might not appeal to everyone. But looking past that, Frogun Encore is a delightful platformer that successfully builds on the strengths of its predecessor. It’s a worthy addition to any platforming fan’s library, even if you’ve already played the original.
