Darkest Dungeon II review (PS5)

Darkest Dungeon II by Red Hook Studios, now on PlayStation 5 after its 2023 launch on PC, retains the brutal nature of its predecessor while introducing fresh mechanics and a brand new narrative. The game’s premise remains a dark and foreboding journey, where players lead a team of four heroes across a grim landscape in a desperate last bid to prevent the apocalypse from happening – cheerful stuff. This roguelike adventure stands out with its combination of a deeply atmospheric world and the psychological stress placed on the heroes that have to navigate it.

The game’s core mechanics have evolved significantly since the first game, making is a surprisingly large departure from what you might be familiar with. The turn-based combat, which the original was lauded for, returns with refined stats and rules, introducing the new Token System. This system adds strategic depth, making every decision impactful and the combat more engaging than before. The Altar of Hope, an extensive upgrade system, allows players to tailor their strategies and improve their subsequent runs, providing a sense of progression even in defeat.

Narratively, Darkest Dungeon II excels in exploring the tragic backstories of its heroes. Each character’s journey is full of with emotional highs and lows, enhanced by the Affinity System, which tracks relationships and stress levels between the members of your party. This dynamic can lead to either powerful synergies or catastrophic dysfunctions, adding an additional layer of complexity to the gameplay.

Visually, the game has made a significant leap forward from the first game – which we actually played on a Vita. The signature art style of Darkest Dungeon is now rendered in 3D, with improved animations and visual effects. The environments are varied and richly detailed, from the burning Sprawl to the diseased Foetor, each posing unique challenges. This visual upgrade is complemented by an evocative soundtrack and superb voice acting, particularly Wayne June’s excellent narration.

Despite these strengths, the game’s high difficulty level and the punishing nature of its roguelike elements might not appeal to everyone. Some players may find the relentless stress management and the frequent, unavoidable losses frustrating. However, for those who enjoy a rigorous challenge and a richly atmospheric experience, Darkest Dungeon II offers a deeply rewarding journey – and despite the changes, if you’ve played the first game then you kind of know what you’re getting into here.

In conclusion, Darkest Dungeon II on PlayStation 5 shows us that Red Hook Studios has the ability to innovate while staying true to their roots. With its refined mechanics, compelling narrative, and gorgeous visuals, it provides an intense, memorable experience that fans of the original and newcomers who fancy a challenge will appreciate.
