TAITO Milestones 3 review (Switch)

TAITO Milestones 3 is the latest collection of classic arcade titles from ININ and TAITO, delivering more nostalgia-packed arcade classics for retro gaming enthusiasts. Featuring ten games spanning different genres and eras, the compilation offers both rare gems and iconic hits for long-time fans of TAITO’s catalog as well as a new generation of players. As with many retro collections it’s a mixed bag in terms of appeal and execution, but we think it’s the best entry in the Milestones series thus far.

The game lineup is undoubtedly the biggest draw. The inclusion of beloved classics like Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands adds an undeniable charm, showcasing the creative heights of 80s arcade design. Both titles still hold up well, with tight gameplay mechanics and an undeniable sense of fun, especially when played cooperatively. On the other hand, the Rastan Saga series is a more niche inclusion, appealing to fans of hack-and-slash platformers. While Rastan Saga II and Warrior Blade expand the universe and mechanics of the original, they lack the universal appeal of a game like Bubble Bobble.

Retro fans should enjoy the fact that this collection features the console debut of Dead Connection, a lesser-known title that blends 1950s mobster themes with fast-paced action. Its chaotic gameplay and unique aesthetic feel fresh even decades after its arcade debut, making it a highlight for collectors. Similarly, Runark (also known as Growl) impresses with its frantic beat-em-up gameplay and quirky premise, as players battle poachers to save animals. These rarer titles provide a sense of novelty, even for those familiar with TAITO’s bigger hits that we’ve seen in other releases before.

While the gameplay holds up for many of these titles, the controls can sometimes feel dated. Some games, like Cadash, feature mechanics that were innovative at the time but feel a tad clunky by modern standards. The action RPG elements, while ambitious, lack the fluidity and depth expected today. Conversely, simpler games like Thunder Fox benefit from straightforward run-and-gun mechanics, translating well to the Switch’s controls.

Visually, the collection stays true to its roots, retaining the pixel art and vibrant color palettes that defined the era. The games look crisp on the Switch’s screen, whether docked or in handheld mode, thanks to the emulator’s clear presentation and solid performance. That said, there’s a noticeable lack of customization options for visuals, such as scanline filters or aspect ratio tweaks, which would have enhanced the retro experience in ways we’ve seen elsewhere. The audio design, with its nostalgic chiptunes and sound effects, remains a strong point, and although some tracks and effects might feel repetitive over extended play sessions we’ll never get enough of the melodies in Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands.

The biggest drawback is the limited extras. Unlike other retro collections that often include behind-the-scenes content, artwork, or developer commentary, TAITO Milestones 3 is fairly barebones in terms of bonus features. This omission might leave players wanting more context or celebration of these classic titles through museum-like content. The lack of online multiplayer is another missed opportunity, especially for co-op-heavy games like Bubble Bobble or Runark, which rely in part on shared experiences for their charm.

Despite its shortcomings, TAITO Milestones 3 is a great addition to any retro enthusiast’s library, especially for those who value arcade history. The mix of iconic titles and lesser-known gems provides a comprehensive look at TAITO’s contributions to the arcade era. While the lack of modern enhancements and additional features might disappoint some players, the core gameplay still shines, reminding us why these games were so beloved in the first place. For Switch owners craving a trip down memory lane, this collection is a solid, if imperfect, choice. Unless you already have access to Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands, we’d consider this a must-have.
