Snow Bros. Wonderland review (PS5)

The Snow Bros. franchise is a nostalgic touchstone for fans of classic arcade gaming who enjoy games like Bubble Bobble and Rodland, and Snow Bros. Wonderland, developed by Tatsujin and published by Clear River Games, seeks to reintroduce Nick and Tom to a modern audience. This latest entry not only revives some of the core mechanics of the series but also offers new features to expand its appeal. However, while it delivers a satisfying dose of retro charm, its transition to 3D and some modern gameplay updates are a bit of a mixed snowball.

The game’s premise sticks to its roots: Nick and Tom must rescue the princesses and save Snow Land from the clutches of King Atchich. This setup is delightfully simple, maintaining the quirky charm that made the originals so endearing. Fans of the series will appreciate the callbacks to the 1990 arcade classic and its sequel, while newcomers can still enjoy the premise without prior knowledge of the franchise.

Gameplay remains focused on turning enemies into snowballs and launching them to clear the screen. The inclusion of chain attacks and large boss battles adds variety, and the basic mechanics are as fun and satisfying as ever. However, the transition to a 3D isometric perspective brings both advantages and challenges. While the visuals are vibrant and give the game a modern look, the isometric angle occasionally makes precision tricky, particularly during faster-paced levels or when aiming snowballs. This can be frustrating, especially for players who are used to the original 2D gameplay.

One of the biggest novelties is the addition of four-player multiplayer, which elevates the experience significantly. Playing with friends adds a chaotic and enjoyable dynamic to the action, and the character customization options (think hats and scarves) help make each player’s avatar feel unique. Unfortunately, the fun of multiplayer is offset slightly by some balancing issues; with multiple players, the game can feel either too hectic or too easy, depending on the level, team composition and experience of those playing. Still, the joy of playing cooperatively often outweighs these shortcomings.

The visuals and audio in Snow Bros. Wonderland are a mixed bag. The 3D models are colorful and capture the playful spirit of the original games, but some environments feel repetitive and lack the detail needed to make them truly memorable. On the audio front, the soundtrack features upbeat tunes that complement the gameplay, though they can become repetitive over longer sessions. Sound effects, on the other hand, are a standout, with satisfying crunches and thuds accompanying each snowball toss to add a wintery feel.

Overall, Snow Bros. Wonderland succeeds in bringing the classic arcade formula to a new generation while offering enough updates to entice returning fans. The addition of four-player multiplayer and the shift to 3D visuals showcase a willingness to innovate, even if these changes are not without their rough edges. It’s a fun, accessible game that shines brightest when enjoyed with friends, and those who have fond memories of the original games will certainly have fun with it.
