ENDER MAGNOLIA: Bloom in the Mist review (PS5)

As the eagerly anticipated spiritual successor to Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights, ENDER MAGNOLIA: Bloom in the Mist steps into the spotlight with a dark fantasy narrative and refined 2D action RPG mechanics. Developed by Adglobe and Live Wire and published by Binary Haze Interactive, the game takes players on a melancholic journey through the Land of Fumes, a world that is both beautiful to look at and home to a tragic story. The game expands on the formula established by its predecessor and is another must-play, even though it occasionally shows a rough edge or two.

The story introduces Lilac, an “Attuner” tasked with saving Homunculi driven mad by the toxic fumes that engulf their kingdom. The narrative intertwines themes of loss, rebirth, and the ethical dilemmas surrounding artificial life forms. The post-apocalyptic setting is steeped in atmosphere, with its abandoned cities, decayed laboratories, and towering industrial landscapes providing a backdrop that is rich in lore. The premise is compelling, even if the pacing of the story can falter in places, particularly during extended exposition that detracts from the sense of discovery.

Gameplay strikes a balance between exploration, combat, and resource management. The revamped battle system offers more depth and variety compared to Ender Lilies, with 30 unique skills to acquire from Homunculi companions. These abilities encourage experimentation and adaptation, particularly during challenging encounters. However, the difficulty spikes can feel abrupt as you experiment with them, especially for players new to the genre, even with the inclusion of adjustable difficulty levels. Exploration is rewarding, with hidden relics and equipment upgrades providing incentives to thoroughly scour each area. Level designs can feel a tad repetitive, but the myriad of ways to tackle them more than make up for that.

Controls are responsive and intuitive, making both combat and platforming sequences satisfying. Lilac’s ability to harness skills from allies adds strategic depth to gameplay, though managing multiple abilities in fast-paced situations can feel overwhelming or even cumbersome at times. The fluid animations and responsive controls help offset these moments of frustration, because when it flows, it all flows beautifully.

Visually, ENDER MAGNOLIA is a feast for the eyes, with detailed environments and hand-drawn art that capture the desolate beauty of the Land of Fumes. The design of the Homunculi and other creatures is a standout, blending a certain charm with a sense of underlying menace. Complementing the visuals is the soundtrack by Mili, whose compositions elevate the emotional resonance of the game’s world. The music ranges from somber piano melodies to sweeping orchestral pieces, ensuring that every moment feels appropriately cinematic. However, the audio mixing occasionally causes dialogue or sound effects to overshadow the music, which is a slight balance issue in an otherwise stellar presentation.

ENDER MAGNOLIA builds upon the strengths of its predecessor with refined mechanics and a richly realized world, even if it is not without its flaws. The narrative’s pacing and occasional repetition in gameplay can detract ever so slightly from the overall experience, but the combination of captivating visuals, a haunting soundtrack, and engaging combat make it a fantastic entry in the Metroidvania genre. For fans of dark fantasy and exploration-driven games, ENDER MAGNOLIA: Bloom in the Mist delivers a poignant and memorable adventure.
