Ninja Gaiden 2 Black review (PS5)

When Ninja Gaiden 2 originally launched, it cemented itself as one of the most intense and brutal action games of its time. Now, with Ninja Gaiden 2 Black on PlayStation 5, Koei Tecmo brings back Ryu Hayabusa’s blood-soaked odyssey with enhanced visuals, smoother performance, and additional gameplay refinements. This remaster revives the high-speed action that made the original notorious while updating it for a modern audience, but how well does it hold up in today’s gaming landscape?

Unsurprisingly, the narrative remains mostly unchanged, following Ryu as he embarks on a relentless quest to stop an ancient evil from unleashing destruction upon the world. While storytelling was never the game’s strongest suit, it serves its purpose as a framework for the intense battles ahead. Fans of the original will appreciate the return of familiar characters like Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel, who are now playable with their own unique combat styles, adding more variety to the experience.

The combat in Ninja Gaiden 2 Black remains its defining feature. The game’s fluid and hyper-responsive mechanics allow players to seamlessly chain attacks, counters, and evasions into a ballet of destruction. The remaster ensures that every slash, shuriken toss, and devastating finisher is as satisfying as ever, with improved framerates ensuring smooth execution of techniques. The inclusion of the “hero play style” mode makes the game more accessible by providing automatic assists during challenging encounters, but purists who embraced the original’s difficulty will likely stick with the traditional difficulty settings that demand precise mastery.

A major highlight of this remaster is its visual overhaul. The original’s fast-paced, stylized violence is now accompanied by enhanced lighting, richer textures, and higher resolutions thanks to Unreal Engine 5 – a major upgrade. Environments feel more detailed, and the improved character models breathe new life into Ryu and his adversaries. The gore system, which was a key element of the original, has been faithfully remastered with an option to toggle it on or off, catering to different player preferences.

However, while the visuals have received a facelift, some aspects of the game’s design still show their age. Camera issues persist, especially in tight combat spaces, occasionally leading to frustrating moments where enemies are difficult to track. Additionally, while the combat remains stellar, enemy AI can sometimes feel overly aggressive or unfair, which is a lingering issue from the original release that hasn’t been fully addressed in this version unless you count the more forgiving difficulty options.

The game’s soundtrack retains its energetic, high-intensity compositions that complement the action well, while sound effects – particularly the clash of steel and the impact of finishing moves – add weight to the combat. Voice acting, on the other hand, remains serviceable at best, with some performances feeling stiff by today’s standards.

As a package, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black successfully brings back a modern classic with meaningful enhancements. The remastered visuals, improved performance, and added content provide an appealing reason for both longtime fans and newcomers to dive in. However, the game’s legacy issues, such as its sometimes frustrating camera and punishing difficulty spikes, are still present. For those seeking a hardcore action experience, this remains one of the best in the genre, even if it occasionally shows its age.

Score: 8.1/10
