Turbo Overkill takes the best elements of 90s-inspired shooters and injects them with a dose of modern speed and style. Developed by Trigger Happy Interactive and published by Apogee Entertainment, the game wears its influences on its sleeve, delivering a hyper-violent, neon-drenched FPS that keeps the adrenaline flowing from start to finish. It blends the over-the-top action of DOOM Eternal with the cybernetic aesthetic of Ghostrunner, all while maintaining a kind of gunplay that is reminiscent of Quake and Duke Nukem 3D – and now it’s finally available on consoles!
At the heart of Turbo Overkill is Johnny Turbo, a cybernetically enhanced protagonist equipped with an arsenal of devastating weapons and a chainsaw embedded in his leg. This feature isn’t just for show—it allows for satisfying slide-based kills that encourage aggressive, high-speed movement through levels. Combat is fluid, fast, and unrelenting, rewarding players who take full advantage of wall-running, dashes, and grapple hooks to dominate enemies from all angles. It takes a bit of practice, but it’s awesome when it clicks.
The game’s level design is another highlight, featuring sprawling arenas and layered verticality that accommodate multiple playstyles. Secrets are scattered throughout, encouraging exploration beyond the frantic gunfights. The environments themselves are dripping in cyberpunk style, illuminated by neon-soaked cityscapes that make every battle feel like part of a larger dystopian warzone. The enemy variety is strong as well, with foes that force players to constantly switch tactics and weaponry to stay ahead or even alive.
One of the most praised aspects of the game on PC was always its weaponry, which includes both traditional FPS staples and more experimental cybernetic tools. Guns feel weighty and impactful, with a mix of high-powered shotguns, explosive launchers, and plasma rifles that ensure combat remains consistently engaging. Augmentations further deepen the gameplay, allowing for skill-based enhancements that cater to different playstyles, whether it’s increased mobility, stronger attacks, or crowd control abilities.
While Turbo Overkill delivers an incredible FPS experience, there are minor drawbacks. The sheer intensity of the action can become overwhelming for some players, especially those who prefer a slower, more tactical approach. Additionally, the narrative, while serviceable, takes a backseat to the gameplay, making it more about the moment-to-moment thrills rather than an engaging cyberpunk story. However, for those seeking an unapologetically fast and brutal shooter, Turbo Overkill delivers in spades and it’s a shame we had to wait this long for it to appear on consoles – it’s brilliant and a must-play.
