BLEACH Rebirth of Souls review (PS5)

BLEACH Rebirth of Souls marks the return of the beloved anime franchise to the gaming world, offering fans a 3D fighting experience on major systems including the PlayStation 5. The game ambitiously attempts to encapsulate the essence of Tite Kubo’s creation, allowing players to relive iconic moments and engage in battles with a roster of familiar characters – for a game that is best suited to BLEACH fans.

The narrative spans from Ichigo Kurosaki’s initial foray as a Substitute Soul Reaper up to the climactic confrontation with Sosuke Aizen in the Arrancar Arc. While this provides a comprehensive overview of the series’ early events, it notably omits the later arcs, leaving the story feeling somewhat incomplete. The storytelling approach, though earnest, lacks the depth and engagement that long-time fans might hope for, resulting in a retelling that feels more like a recap than an immersive experience.

Combat is where Rebirth of Souls shines. Each character is rendered with attention to detail, capturing their unique fighting styles and abilities. The mechanics strike a balance between accessibility for newcomers and depth for seasoned players, offering a layered system that rewards strategic play. Executing powerful moves and counters feels satisfying, and the visual effects during battles add to the excitement. However, the absence of a ranked mode and crossplay functionality limits the game’s competitive longevity, potentially hindering its appeal to the broader fighting game community.

Visually, the game presents well-crafted character models and dynamic combat animations that are faithful to the anime’s aesthetic – which will be to the delight of fans of the series. The environments, while recognizable, suffer from less detailed textures and a certain lack of vibrancy, which can detract from the overall immersion. The user interface is sleek and intuitive, enhancing the player’s experience outside of combat.

Audibly, Rebirth of Souls excels with a soundtrack that blends iconic tracks from the series with new compositions, effectively capturing the spirit of BLEACH. Both Japanese and English voice casts deliver commendable performances, adding authenticity to the characters and their interactions.

In terms of content, the game offers a limited selection of modes, including the main story, secret stories, and various battle options. While the main story provides a nostalgic journey through familiar arcs, the additional modes lack the depth and variety to keep players engaged over the long term. The character roster, though substantial, could benefit from more diversity, especially considering the expansive universe of BLEACH – which as we pointed out earlier is also true for the story.

Overall, BLEACH Rebirth of Souls serves as a heartfelt homage to the series, capturing the thrill of its battles and the essence of its characters. However, certain shortcomings in narrative depth, mode variety, and online features prevent it from fully realizing its potential. For devoted fans, it offers a nostalgic return to the world of Soul Reapers, but it may leave others yearning for a more comprehensive and polished fighting game experience.
