Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark review (PS5)

Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark marks a step forward in the series, transitioning from the linear action of its predecessor to a more Metroidvania-like experience. Developed by INTI CREATES and published by PQube on consoles, this title introduces players to the Demon Realm, where they control sisters Kirika and Masha on a mission to restore their master, Demon Lord Maxim.

The narrative centers on Kirika and Masha, who must navigate the treacherous Demon Realm to collect the scattered remains of Maxim. This quest is enriched by the introduction of various vassals, each adding depth and personality to the storyline. The interplay between the sisters and these characters provides a compelling backdrop to the adventure, adding dialogue and narrative into a genre not typically known for it.

Gameplay mechanics are robust, allowing players to switch seamlessly between Kirika, who wields demonic guns for ranged attacks, and Masha, who uses a whip for close combat. The dynamic of switching between them is essential for overcoming the game’s diverse challenges and puzzles. The inclusion of sub-weapons and abilities further enhances combat strategies and your options for exploration. Notably, the level design has seen considerable improvement over the first Gal Guardians game, featuring multiple biomes filled with varied enemies and platforming challenges.

Controls are intuitive, facilitating smooth transitions between characters and effective use of their unique abilities. The game offers multiple difficulty settings – Casual, Veteran, and Legend – catering to a broad spectrum of players and ensuring accessibility without compromising on challenge.

Visually, Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark impresses with detailed sprite work and diverse environments that bring the Demon Realm to life. The art style strikes a balance between gothic and anime-inspired aesthetics, appealing to fans of both genres. Complementing the visuals is a well-composed soundtrack that enhances the atmosphere and immersion. The game’s charming characters, interesting map design, and thrilling boss battles contribute to a memorable experience.

However, the game is not without its shortcomings. Some players may find certain mechanics, such as the revive system, to disrupt the flow of gameplay. Additionally, while the environments are richly designed, some areas may feel repetitive over time. But despite these minor issues, Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark offers a very satisfying and engaging Metroidvania adventure that builds upon its predecessor’s foundation in many ways.

Score: 8.2/10
