Tempest Rising review (PC)

Tempest Rising, developed by Slipgate Ironworks and published by 3D Realms, is a real-time strategy game that pays homage to the classic RTS titles of the 90s and 2000s – Command and Conquer and Red Alert in particular. Set in an alternate history where the Cuban Missile Crisis escalated into a global conflict, the game introduces a world reshaped by a mysterious resource called Tempest. Players can engage in two distinct 11-mission campaigns, choosing between the Global Defense Forces (GDF) and the Tempest Dynasty, each offering unique units and strategies.

The narrative unfolds through fully voiced briefings and cutscenes, providing context and depth to the ongoing conflict. While the storyline may not break new ground, it effectively sets the stage for the strategic battles that follow. The inclusion of a third faction, the enigmatic Necrons, adds an element of intrigue and unpredictability to the storyline. It’s not quite as campy as the old full motion video cutscenes of the Westwood days, but it certainly adds flavor.

Gameplay in Tempest Rising adheres to traditional RTS mechanics, including base building, resource gathering, and unit management. The game introduces the Tempest resource, which players must harvest to fund their operations. Each faction offers unique units and abilities, encouraging diverse strategies and playstyles. The campaigns are well-structured, gradually introducing new units and challenges to keep players engaged. However, some players may find the AI’s difficulty curve steep at times, particularly in the later missions.

Visually, Tempest Rising presents a polished and detailed environment that captures the essence of classic RTS games while incorporating modern graphical enhancements. The game’s interface is intuitive, allowing for efficient unit control and base management. Audio design complements the visual elements, with a soundtrack that evokes the tension and urgency of wartime scenarios. Voice acting and sound effects are competently executed, though they may not stand out as particularly memorable compared to some of the iconic lines in the games that inspired this one.

Multiplayer modes offer additional replayability, with options for skirmishes and ranked matches. The game’s balance between factions ensures competitive gameplay, though some more variety in maps and game modes would have been welcome. The inclusion of a Glicko-2 rating system provides a structured approach to matchmaking, catering to both casual and competitive players.

In summary, Tempest Rising successfully revives the classic RTS formula, delivering a game that pays homage to its predecessors while introducing its own unique elements. While it may not revolutionize the genre, it offers a solid and engaging experience for fans of real-time strategy games. Its blend of nostalgic gameplay and modern features makes it a noteworthy addition to the RTS landscape, and one of the best in recent years.
