Survive The Fall review (PC)

In the saturated realm of post-apocalyptic games, Survive The Fall by Angry Bulls Studio and published by Toplitz Productions carves its niche by blending survival mechanics with base-building and tactical combat. Set in a world devastated by a meteor strike, players navigate the challenges of rebuilding society amidst the remnants of a fallen civilization. It’s an ambitious title we very saw in a Gamescom presentation last summer, and we were eager to see all of its mechanics again and have more time with it.

The game introduces players to a dual gameplay loop: isometric exploration and base management. During expeditions, players control a trio of survivors, each with unique skills, to scavenge resources, confront threats, and uncover the mysteries of the world. The exploration segments are rich with atmospheric details, capturing the eerie beauty of a world in stasis. Combat is real-time with a tactical pause feature, allowing for strategic planning during encounters.

Back at the base, the focus shifts to constructing and managing a settlement. With over 30 structures to build, from farms to research labs, players must ensure the well-being of their community. Assigning roles based on individual survivor strengths adds depth to the management aspect. However, the UI can feel a tad cluttered, making resource management a bit cumbersome at times.

Narratively, Survive The Fall opts for a more subdued approach. While the overarching story of survival and rebuilding is compelling, character development can feel lacking, with protagonists that don’t leave a lasting impression. Nevertheless, the game’s atmosphere, bolstered by its art direction and environmental storytelling, compensates for these shortcomings.

Technically, the game performs adequately, though it’s not without its flaws – like small visual glitches that don’t get in the way of your enjoyment. As mentioned, inventory management can be tedious, with limited sorting options leading to potential frustration during extended play sessions. Despite these issues, the game’s mechanics and immersive world-building offer a rewarding experience for fans of the genre.

In conclusion, Survive The Fall presents a thoughtful take on post-apocalyptic survival, emphasizing community and resilience. While it has areas that could benefit from refinement, its blend of exploration, combat, and base-building provides a satisfying journey for players seeking depth and atmosphere in their survival games. Toplitz tends to build on their successes, and we hope this one is no exception.
