Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon review (PS5)

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a first-person, open-world RPG developed by Questline and published by Awaken Realms. Set in a dark reimagining of Arthurian legends, the game immerses players in a world where the once-glorious kingdom of Avalon has fallen into decay. The narrative unfolds as players, starting as a prisoner, are thrust into a land plagued by a mysterious force initially only known as the Wyrdness. The story is rich with morally ambiguous choices and a sense of impending doom, drawing players into its complex lore over time. We checked it out on a PlayStation 5.

Gameplay-wise, Tainted Grail offers a blend of exploration, combat, and survival mechanics. Players can customize their combat style, choosing between melee weapons, bows, magic, and more. The combat system demands precision and strategy, as enemies can be unforgiving. However, some players might find the stamina-based combat and survival elements, like managing hunger and light sources, to be challenging and potentially frustrating as they take time away from the narrative.

The game’s world design is one of its standout features. Avalon is divided into three distinct regions, each with its own unique atmosphere and challenges. The environments are meticulously crafted, offering a sense of immersion and discovery. However, the lack of a traditional quest log or map markers can make navigation and objective tracking difficult at times, potentially leading to confusion.

Visually, Tainted Grail captures the essence of a dark fantasy world. The art direction, inspired by Celtic and Lovecraftian themes, creates a hauntingly beautiful landscape. The audio design complements this, with ambient sounds and a moody soundtrack enhancing the game’s atmosphere. Nevertheless, technical issues such as occasional bugs and performance hiccups can detract from the overall experience and should be ironed out post-launch. If that happens, Tainted Grail can rival what you see in much bigger releases.

The game’s commitment to player choice extends beyond combat and exploration. Decisions made throughout the game can have significant consequences, affecting the world and its inhabitants. This adds a layer of depth and replayability, encouraging players to consider their actions carefully. However, the game’s steep learning curve and the need for careful resource management may not appeal to all novices in the genre.

In conclusion, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a bold and ambitious RPG that offers a unique take on Arthurian legends. Its immersive world, complex narrative, and challenging gameplay make it a compelling experience for fans of dark fantasy. While technical issues and a demanding survival system may pose challenges, those willing to delve into its depths will find a richly rewarding adventure.

  1. I find there is barely any survival aspect to the game, yes there is food and the day/night cycle has more impact but the word triggers a whole genre for me – one that Tainted Grail is not part of. Gist is you liked any Elder Scrolls game in the past you are gonna love this one here a lot.
