Gun X review (Quest)

Stepping into Gun X on Meta Quest delivers a new take on VR shooters, where your weapon isn’t just something you pick up – it’s something you build under pressure. Each match starts with a challenge: assemble your firearm piece by piece before bullets ever start flying. It’s a core mechanic that instantly separates the experience from the more traditional VR shooting gallery fare, creating a loop that’s both tactile and tense. Constructing weapons becomes just as crucial as aiming them, especially when every second counts.

The game’s trio of modes – duels, zombie survival, and a shooting range – each tap into this mechanic in different ways. The duels are fast and competitive, where the winner is often the one with faster hands and sharper recall. In zombie mode, the pressure doesn’t just come from your opponent, but from the swarm of enemies steadily closing in, which makes the act of piecing together a gun feel like a desperate race for survival. The shooting range, while more laid-back, still gives you a satisfying way to perfect your speed and accuracy with each weapon system.

Technically, Gun X performs well on the Quest 3. The visuals are clean and stylized, prioritizing clarity and function over realism – which suits the high-speed nature of the game. Weapon models are detailed and look great in motion, and there’s real satisfaction in seeing each part snap together. The sound design complements the action nicely too, with impactful audio cues for both weapon construction and combat, helping to sell the illusion of physically interacting with real hardware.

That said, there’s a sense that the game’s depth doesn’t quite match the strength of its central idea. With only about ten weapons to build and a relatively modest variety of gameplay challenges, things can start to feel repetitive after extended sessions. The core mechanic remains fun, but it could really shine with the addition of more advanced or unusual weapon parts, alternate assembly challenges, or new mission types that shake up the formula.

Multiplayer, however, helps keep things engaging. The duels are sharp, fast, and generally well-balanced, making it easy to jump into a competitive match and feel challenged without being overwhelmed. The zombie survival mode adds a fun co-op element, and while movement is mostly stationary, the intensity of the action keeps things from feeling static. What you lose in traversal, you gain in focus – Gun X quickly becomes all about your reflexes, memory, and composure.

All in all, Gun X is a compelling and original VR shooter with a clear focus: make the act of handling weapons as active and engaging as firing them. That focus pays off, especially in short bursts or competitive duels. It might benefit from more content variety down the line, but even in its current form, it’s a worthy addition to the Meta Quest’s library for anyone craving fast-paced VR gunplay that demands as much from your brain as your trigger finger.
