INDIKA review (PC)

Indika is a game that defies easy categorization. Developed by Odd Meter and published by 11 Bit Studios, it presents a narrative-driven third-person adventure set in a surreal world where religious visions intersect with a harsh reality. As players embark on a journey with Indika, a young nun accompanied by a most unconventional companion, they are immersed in a narrative that blends dark and twisted humor with introspective exploration.

The game’s premise almost immediately sets a tone of bleakness and despair, warning players that they are entering a world that is devoid of redemption. Across the six-hour journey of the story campaign, players navigate through desolate landscapes and solve puzzles that reflect the inner turmoil of the titular protagonist. And while some puzzles may lack originality, they effectively utilize the unconventional environments to create engaging challenges.

Visually, Indika captivates with its evocative depiction of late 19th-century Russia. From the narrow and almost claustrophobia-inducing lanes of the monastery to the bizarrely oversized elements in the outside world, the game’s environments are both artistic in nature and dreamlike in their delivery. The surprising use of chiptune music adds to the surreal atmosphere, further immersing players in the game’s unique aesthetic.

One of the game’s standout features is its narrative complexity, which delves into themes of faith, doubt, and existential questioning. Through thought-provoking conversations between characters like Indika and the escaped convict Ilya, players are challenged to explore the nuances of religious belief and moral ambiguity. The voice acting, particularly that for Indika, delivers raw authenticity and emotional depth to the characters.

However, Indika is not without its flaws. Some puzzles may feel tonally incongruous or lackluster, hurting the immersion and thus detracting from the overall experience. Additionally, while the game admirably tackles sensitive themes such as the protagonist’s troubled relationship with sexuality, it occasionally falls short in its execution, leaving certain aspects underdeveloped or unexplored – though this may be a subjective statement.

Despite these drawbacks, Indika stands as a testament to the bold creative vision of Odd Meter. By leveraging video game tropes to enrich its thematic exploration, the game offers a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant experience. While it may not appeal to everyone, those willing to engage with its challenging themes and unconventional storytelling will find Indika to be a captivating journey unlike any other.
