Protodroid DeLTA review (PS4)

Protodroid DeLTA, developed by Adam Kareem and published by Humble Games, takes players on a fast-paced adventure in a solarpunk world. In this review, we will explore the game’s premise, gameplay mechanics, controls, visuals, and audio, highlighting its positive aspects while acknowledging its flaws. Inspired by classic 3D platformers like Mega Man X, Protodroid DeLTA aims to captivate players with its action-packed platforming and colorful cast of characters, and we checked out the PlayStation version.

Set in a vibrant vision of Earth’s future, Protodroid DeLTA introduces us to Dr. Shelton, a renowned roboticist who has created an advanced android named DeLTA. Designed to showcase the potential of AI, DeLTA must defend her creator’s lab against the Vypers, a gang of attackers. Equipped with combat capabilities, DeLTA embarks on a mission to protect the region from the Vyper threat, earn the city’s trust, and reveal the true promise of AI. While the game’s story offers interesting characters and twists, it may not captivate players as much as the action does.

Protodroid DeLTA impressively captures the essence of action-packed platformers like the Mega Man X series. Players will find themselves engaged in fast and fluid combat, utilizing a combination of long-range and melee attacks to navigate challenging stages. The game’s 3D platforming sequences offer a mix of moving platforms, traps, and enemies, presenting a rewarding and occasionally frustrating experience. However, the controls and hit detection could be more precise, leading to occasional frustrations and deaths that feel unfair. Overall, Protodroid DeLTA delivers on its promise of dynamic action platforming, albeit with some room for improvement.

Visually, Protodroid DeLTA presents a charming and colorful solarpunk world, combining high-tech buildings with nature-filled environments. While the game’s visuals are appealing, the frame rate can be surprisingly choppy at times, particularly when observing moving elements in the distance. The energetic soundtracks add to the game’s atmosphere though, and the anime-inspired cutscenes stand out as well-executed. However, the majority of interactions occur through dialog boxes, with voice acting that is somewhat lacking in quality.

Protodroid DeLTA successfully captures the spirit of classic 3D platformers like Mega Man X, offering action-packed gameplay with long-range and melee combat. The game’s levels are well-designed and provide replayability, allowing players to tackle stages in any order and discover hidden upgrades. The solarpunk world’s vibrant aesthetics and the variety of abilities and weapons make for an engaging experience. Additionally, the game’s progression system and the option to unlock new suits and upgrades add depth to the gameplay.

Despite its positive aspects, Protodroid DeLTA has a few shortcomings. The platforming-focused gameplay can feel repetitive, and the stages, while visually appealing, can become lengthy. Boss fights, which should be the highlight of the game, often devolve into repetitive dodge-and-shoot encounters, lacking the diversity and depth that would elevate the experience. The narrative takes a backseat to the action, and the controls and hit detection could benefit from further refinement. Despite these shortcomings, however, Protodroid DeLTA is an enjoyable game that will appeal to fans of the genre, especially those seeking a nostalgic experience reminiscent of the Mega Man X series. With some improvements and polish, Protodroid DeLTA could truly shine as a standout title in the action-platformer genre.
