F1 23 review (Xbox Series X)

In F1 23, the latest installment of the official videogame of the 2023 FIA Formula One World Championship developed by Codemasters and published by Electronic Arts, players are invited to experience the high-speed drama and heated rivalries of the F1 racing world yet again. The game introduces a new chapter in the thrilling Braking Point story mode, featuring new rivalries and even more drama. We played the Xbox Series X version of the game.

As with many annual titles, F1 23 is more about refinements than about radically new features. One of the improved elements of F1 23 is the refined handling and improved racing experience. The vehicle physics have been adjusted to provide more predictable behavior on the track, resulting in better traction when braking, accelerating, and turning. This adjustment, influenced by real feedback from F1 teams, contributes to a more realistic feel and fluid racing experience. Whether playing with a controller or a race wheel, the controls are responsive, offering players more control, precision, and finesse in crucial moments – though this will mostly be noticed by those who play with driving aids turned off and enjoy the sim experience.

The artificial intelligence of other drivers in the game has also received a significant upgrade. Opponents now employ different race strategies, adding an extra layer of excitement to the races. This strategic element becomes even more pronounced with the inclusion of the new Red Flag feature, which introduces an authentic strategic element to every race day. Additionally, the introduction of the 35% Race Distance option allows for realistic race strategy and setup, striking a balance between preserving the importance of tire wear and not requiring excessive time commitment for each race.

For those interested in the more dramatic sides of racing, one of the highlights of F1 23 is the return of the Braking Point story mode. While the previous iteration of this mode lacked nuance and depth, the new chapter in F1 23 explores urgent societal issues such as power dynamics, representation, and mental health. By touching upon these complex topics, Codemasters takes a commendable step in addressing relevant themes within the world of Formula 1. Although the storytelling still lacks some nuance, the willingness to engage with such subjects is noteworthy.

At the same time, the game’s monetization model poses a significant downside. F1 23 incorporates F1 World, a new live service environment aimed at keeping players within the EA ecosystem for as long as possible. Daily, weekly, and monthly challenges, alongside various in-game currencies, encourage players to invest considerable time and, potentially, money. While some of the challenges provide exciting scenarios, the ultimate goal of building and racing with your own team in F1 World creates an imbalance. The player who invests the most time and money will have the advantage of fielding the best and fastest car, potentially discouraging those who cannot dedicate as much time or are unwilling to spend extra on microtransactions – and might quickly lose interest as a result.

Furthermore, F1 World’s integration into the game leads to a convoluted menu structure, making it difficult to access standalone races that are unrelated to F1 World. This lack of clarity in navigation can be frustrating for players seeking a straightforward racing experience.

Visually, F1 23 captures the essence of the Formula 1 world with detailed car models and faithfully recreated tracks, including the new Las Vegas and Qatar circuits. The audio design adds to the immersion, with realistic engine sounds and ambient effects, and a good headset or surround setup contributes to the experience, letting you hear where your opponents are before even seeing them. The game succeeds in delivering a visually and aurally captivating experience that captures the excitement of Formula 1, and replays are a visual feast.

Overall, F1 23 impresses with its refined handling, improved AI, and engaging Braking Point story mode. However, the game’s monetization model and the integration of F1 World may be off-putting to some players, potentially creating an imbalance and hindering access to certain features. Nevertheless, the game offers an immersive racing experience, both visually and audibly, and will undoubtedly appeal to Formula 1 enthusiasts and competitive gamers alike.

  1. I find the ‘catch up’ programming has made the game less fun than the 2022 edition, you can’t pull away from the field even if you can put in quicker lap times, so you end up just sitting in 4th or 5th place until the last lap then passing everyone, a really good way to spoil a game, if you’re considering F1 ’23, save your money & get F1 ’22 , it’s more of a challenge
