Embarking on a solo RPG adventure set in the vast expanse of the Star Trek universe is a thrilling prospect, and “Captain’s Log Solo Roleplaying Game” by Modiphius Entertainment aims to fulfill that promise. This 326-page, full-color digest-sized hardcover rulebook opens up uncharted territory in the world of roleplaying games, offering a standalone experience based on the award-winning 2d20 System used in the (multiplayer-oriented) Star Trek Adventures RPG. Because it can be hard to get a group of players together, we were eager to test out Captain’s Log – here are our thoughts.
At its core, the game provides a streamlined version of the 2d20 ruleset that embraces a narrative-driven approach. “Captain’s Log” beckons players to dive into a universe rich with lore and possibilities, allowing them to mold their unique characters and tell their own captivating stories set against the richly detailed backdrop of the Star Trek Universe. The beauty of the game lies in its versatility – whether you’re a lone explorer venturing into the unknown or collaborating with friends to tackle galaxy-spanning missions, the game’s tools and guidance promise countless hours of captivating adventures, as well as a lot of replay value.
One aspect that sets “Captain’s Log” apart is its lifepaths and roles systems, which cater to characters beyond Starfleet captains, enriching the narrative possibilities in each playthrough. This versatility fosters a sense of creativity, enabling players to imagine characters from diverse backgrounds and professions and crafting storylines that are wildly different the next time you play.
The game offers a good space for storytelling, as the solo gameplay promotes drama and agency at fairly regular intervals. The inclusion of over 100 random tables and storytelling matrices is a big benefit, providing a wealth of content for various scenarios, from alien worlds and allies to mission themes and more. This abundance of resources contributes to the boundless potential for storytelling – something that should be at the heart of any Star Trek experience.
A notable strength of the game is its Era-agnostic nature, allowing players to journey across different eras of the Star Trek universe, from the 21st century to the 32nd century and everything in between. This level of freedom empowers players to explore various facets of the franchise’s rich history – though if you have a preference between the different eras then Modiphius has released a number of different versions/covers to cater for that.

On the positive side, the game’s mechanics are streamlined, ensuring accessibility for newcomers to both RPGs and the Star Trek universe – though we consider familiarity with said universe is a bit of a prerequisite. The use of flowcharts and visual aids greatly aids understanding, making the rules less intimidating and more welcoming for those who enjoy Star Trek but have never played an RPG like this. The inclusion of a Mission Tracker is a smart addition, guiding players through structured missions while ensuring pacing and progress.
However, if you’re used to the core Star Trek Adventures mechanics then you’ll notice a few differences that you might have mixed feelings about. The move to a solo-focused system, with probability matrixes determining outcomes, might not resonate with players more used to player interaction. Those extremely fond of traditional Star Trek Adventures mechanics, such as the threat and momentum pool that exists between players, might have a rougher time transitioning to the solo gameplay on offer here. At the same time, we noticed that Captain’s Log is a great stepping stone for those new to RPGs like this, getting them interested in multiplayer experiences after completing their journey.
Captain’s Log caters to a diverse audience, offering an inviting entry point that’s especially enticing for long time Star Trek fans who don’t have a group of people who play RPG titles like this. For seasoned RPG enthusiasts, the game offers an imaginative twist on the familiar, providing fresh perspectives on gameplay dynamics and character-driven narratives and opening up a wealth of possibilities in the Star Trek universe.
This makes Captain’s Log an invitation for players to journey into the final frontier armed with their imagination and the tools to craft their own unique stories. Its Era-agnostic design, user-friendly mechanics, and abundant storytelling resources make it a commendable addition to the Star Trek Adventures lineup. Whether you’re a die-hard Trekkie or a curious newcomer, Captain’s Log beckons you to boldly go where no RPG has gone before, and provides hours of entertainment and replay value at a great price.
