En Garde! review (PC)

En Garde! from Fireplace Games is a debut title for the developer that brings swashbuckling swordplay to players in an engaging and entertaining way. Set against a backdrop of nicely realized locations and charismatic characters, this action-packed adventure introduces Adalia de Volador, a legendary swashbuckler and dashing adventurer, on her journey to challenge the oppressive Count-Duke and bring down his tyranny-filled reign with a sense of flair of her own. En Garde! is currently exclusive to PCs, and we reviewed it on Steam.

The combat system is the heart of the game, emphasizing parries, ripostes, and lunges, but what truly sets it apart is the ingenious way the game handles group fights. Rather than overwhelming the player or presenting a choreographed sequence as a quick time event, En Garde! elegantly introduces a mixture of dueling and chaos. Enemies actively disrupt your main combat with unparryable attacks, forcing you to dodge and improvise. This leads to a dynamic experience where the environment becomes a crucial weapon. Barrels, objects, and hazards take center stage, making every fight an exercise in tactical creativity and a fun blend of different attacks.

There is a sense of humor in En Garde! that is undeniable, infusing both the dialogue and other character interactions with a lighthearted sense of charm. Adalia’s witty comebacks and the quirky guard banter maintain a consistently chuckle-inducing atmosphere. The visual aesthetic adds to the overall appeal, with its vibrant and colorful design that sets the stage for both the action and the comedy without becoming too cartoon-like.

The game’s length, while relatively short with four main chapters, doesn’t deter from the entertainment. The addition of challenges and an Arena Mode extends the gameplay, ensuring replayability for those seeking to master combat and explore the depths of Adalia’s antics – though if you were hoping for an Assassin’s Creed-like length you’ll be disappointed. The combination of simple yet satisfying combat mechanics, humorous dialogue, and captivating aesthetics create a memorable experience while it lasts though, and leaves players hoping for a follow-up.

However, En Garde! isn’t without its minor setbacks. While the combat is engaging, the shallowness of enemy variety and combat mechanics becomes apparent in the later stages, leading to a sense of repetitiveness. Despite these limitations, the game’s concise and focused approach keeps it entertaining throughout, making sure it doesn’t overstay its welcome.

In conclusion, En Garde! stands out as a compact and charismatic swashbuckling adventure that deftly blends action and humor. With its endearing protagonist, creative combat, and charming aesthetic, Fireplace Games has created a captivating experience that leaves players eager to see more from this promising new studio. Although it might leave you yearning for a longer, more expansive title, the existing package is a delightful little adventure that showcases the potential for greatness from Fireplace Games in the future.
