How 2 Escape review (PS5)

How 2 Escape, a brand new game from Breakfirst Games that is being published by Just For Games, is a unique co-op escape room experience that takes a fresh twist on puzzle-solving. In this intriguing game, which we first got to see in action during Gamescom, players must work together while being physically apart, bringing an exciting challenge to the table. The premise of How 2 Escape revolves around two siblings, Emy and Johann, who find themselves in a perilous situation aboard a speeding train. Emy is trapped on the train, and Johann, her brother, becomes her lifeline by providing her with essential information to help her escape.

The innovative aspect of How 2 Escape is its asymmetrical gameplay. One player assumes the role of Emy, navigating the treacherous train environment, while the other player, Johann, employs a dedicated companion app on a mobile device or PC. This division of roles adds a layer of suspense and cooperation that is reminiscent of titles like Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. The game cleverly requires constant communication and teamwork to conquer each challenge, as Johann must relay critical information, codes, and hints to Emy to aid her progress.

The campaign in How 2 Escape is divided into distinct train carriages, each presenting a unique set of puzzles and time-based challenges. Players must think quickly, work together effectively, and remain in close communication to succeed. The time pressure element keeps the tension high and adds a sense of urgency to the experience.

When you look at how this is implemented, a fun feature of How 2 Escape is its use of the companion app, which visually mimics a smartphone interface for an immersive experience. Johann’s role is to interact with this app, accessing messages, codes, and images that are vital for solving puzzles. This integration between the game and the app is well-executed as well, providing a seamless and immersive experience for both players.

However, it’s important to note that while How 2 Escape offers an innovative and engaging co-op experience that is fun to play, it’s not without its shortcomings. Some puzzles may feel a tad too obtuse or overly challenging, occasionally leading to frustration. The hint system is hit and miss as well, as it can sometimes provide too much information or not enough, leaving players stuck or wishing they hadn’t used the hint. Additionally, the game’s localization and English text could benefit from improvement for a smoother overall experience – but we’re hoping this can be fixed post-launch.

Graphically, How 2 Escape opts for a clear and simple visual style, yet it effectively conveys the atmosphere of being trapped on a speeding train. The use of visual effects to signify the passage of time and the increasing urgency is a nice design touch, and the soundscape complements the gameplay by providing cues and enhancing the already immersive experience.

In summary, How 2 Escape offers an engaging and unique co-op escape room experience that makes great use of a companion app. The game’s time-based challenges and constant communication requirements create tension and excitement. And while there are some challenging puzzles and localization issues, it’s a game that can provide enjoyable hours of cooperative gameplay where it’s fun to switch roles for a second playthrough (the puzzle solutions can be changed). If you’re looking for a distinct and engaging co-op adventure that doesn’t require an internet connection, How 2 Escape is worth considering. It may not be a perfect escape, but it’s certainly an intriguing one.
