Bang-On Balls: Chronicles review (PS5)

Bang-On Balls: Chronicles, developed by Exit Plan Games and published by Untold Tales and CouchPlay Interactive, is a really good 3D platformer that brings a fresh and bouncy take to the genre. As protagonist BOB, players are thrust into a series of historically themed open worlds, each brimming with unique mechanics, enemies, and secrets. The game offers a mix of open-world exploration, destructible environments, and quirky combat reminiscent of classic platformers. And while we initially thought this one was going to be all about concept, it turns out it’s one of the better platformers of the year. We played the PlayStation 5 version.

One standout feature that will immediately capture your attention is the game’s vibrant and detailed visual style. The environments, inspired by historical settings ranging from the time of the Vikings to the Space Race, showcase a level of polish that rivals that of much larger titles. The worlds are all rich in detail, creating an immersive experience for players to explore and get lost in. On top of that, each area offers its own set of challenges, puzzles, and hidden treasures.

The absence of a conventional narrative is a bit of a shame, but it doesn’t hinder the game’s appeal too much. Bang-On Balls: Chronicles has a solid concept instead, where players take on the role of a ball navigating through movie lot soundstages to access different worlds. The lack of a traditional story is somewhat compensated by the engaging and comedic voices of the in-game characters, which adds a layer of charm and humor that resonates throughout the experience.

One of the game’s most commendable aspects is its extensive character customization suite. Players can collect an array of weapons, shields, and themed items to personalize their bouncing hero, unleashing your creativity without any kind of need for paid DLC – you can earn more items through gameplay instead.

The gameplay mechanics feature responsive controls and a physics model that handles the chaos of bouncing combat admirably. The simplicity of combat, involving dashing and bouncing into enemies, provides an enjoyable and satisfying experience. The multiplayer option, accommodating up to four players in online co-op or two players in split-screen, adds a social dimension to the gameplay.

However, the game is not without its minor flaws. Some players may find the movement mechanics a bit repetitive, and those looking for depth in their combat might also want to look elsewhere. But despite these minor drawbacks, Bang-On Balls: Chronicles is a great indie 3D platformer, surpassing our expectations with its captivating worlds, engaging exploration, and delightful humor. There’s even additional (and free) post-launch content planned, so if you’re looking for a 3D platformer that is high on fun, Bang-On Balls is a game that more than delivers.

Score: 8.0/10
