Sonic Green Hill Zone REALMz Wired controller review (Switch)

The REALMz line of products that PDP launched earlier this year features a number of really great holiday gift ideas, one of them being the REALMz Sonic Wired Controller for the Nintendo Switch. As with the headset we also reviewed, the controller features a tiny Sonic figurine embedded inside its case – which will make it a hit with Sonic fans even before they start playing. The REALMz series features several gamepad designs based on different IPs, but we’re checking out the Sonic variant, which features a clear shell with a multi-layered print of the iconic Green Hill Zone on the front, providing a visually stunning backdrop for the figurine that’s embedded on the bottom left side of the controller.

We’ve already mentioned it in our intro, but the standout feature of the controller is the small Sonic figure embedded in the left grip, making this gamepad almost feel like a collectible. The clear shell and multi-layered design being on the inside of it contribute to the pad’s durability, ensuring that the intricate print won’t scratch off or wear easily. Additionally, the controller features white lights to highlight its design during use, another pleasant surprise for a gamepad at this price point.

In terms of build quality, the controller maintains a sturdy form factor, but its extremely light weight may be a drawback for those accustomed to heftier controllers – weight-wise this is a controller best suited to kids. The vibrant red buttons and thumbsticks, combined with the transparent design, make for an aesthetically pleasing controller that stands out with its Sonic-themed color scheme.

Performance-wise, the controller proves to be responsive and comfortable during extended gaming sessions. The absence of gyro controls and rumble features, however, might deter users who value these functionalities – and we thought the lack of a rumble feature in particular made a difference in certain games. There’s also a wireless version of the controller available, but we found the and the 6.5ft cable sufficiently long for our setup, and are happy we didn’t have to worry about battery life either. The cheaper price point helps the wired version as well, since the wireless model is dangerously close to Nintendo’s Pro Controller – a more feature-rich alternative.

In conclusion, the PDP REALMz Sonic Wired Controller serves as an attractive addition to any gaming setup, especially for collectors or fans of the Sonic franchise. While it may not replace higher-end controllers in terms of features, its unique design, sturdy build, and reasonable price make it a commendable choice for those looking to blend style and functionality, with a controller that doesn’t just look better than the competitors in this price range, it also has a much sturdier feel to it. If you’re looking at a gift for Sonic fans that play on a Switch, this is a great option.
