Chessarama review (Xbox)

We’ve played previously chess-based puzzle games from developer Minimol Games, but Chessarama looked far more polished, creative and feature-rich when it was announced. It offers a collection of original puzzle and strategy games that reimagine chess rules and tactics through diverse themes and setups. We checked out the Xbox version to see how it turned out.

The gameplay of Chessarama centers around a variety of chess-derived puzzles and challenges, with each game mode presenting different aspects of the classic game. The puzzles are thoughtfully designed, offering an accessible entry point for players new to chess while progressively introducing more complex concepts as long as you have the fundaments of movement on the board down. The pacing of challenges ensures players feel in control, starting with simplicity and gradually evolving to test acquired skills.

There are eight chess-inspired games in Chessarama, such as Farm Life, Dragon Slayers, and Street Soccer, and they provide a diverse and satisfying experience. For instance, in Dragon Slayer, players face the task of guiding a pawn to defeat a mighty dragon, adding a layer of complexity with each move as well as a neat fantasy/heroic theme. Similarly, Lady Ronin combines chess with Sokoban mechanics, creating an intriguing blend of strategy and puzzle-solving.

One of the game’s strengths lies in its ability to teach chess fundamentals through engaging puzzles. The incorporation of various challenges and win conditions keeps the experience fresh and rewarding, ensuring players continually refine their skills. Chessarama employs an XP system to unlock content gradually as well, preventing overwhelming newer players while offering a steady stream of rewards for accomplishments and easing them in with a good learning curve.

The visual presentation of Chessarama adopts a simple yet cartoonish style that strikes a balance between playfulness and strategic focus. Each game mode has its own unique art style, accompanied by beautiful dioramas that enhance the overall aesthetic appeal – compared to previous games from the developer, this is a major leap forward. The game’s soundtrack complements the visuals, with each board featuring a distinct track that adds to the experience.

In terms of longevity, Chessarama shines, thanks to its replayability and the online play option (which you don’t unlock until you hit a certain XP level). The variety of game modes, coupled with handcrafted levels and additional challenges, ensures players have a wealth of content to explore. The online chess mode faithfully represents the classic game as well, maintaining an entertaining pace with a built-in timer – though if you’re looking to play regular chess you might not be playing on a console.

Despite some shortcomings, Chessarama stands out in the crowded landscape of chess-inspired gaming. Its inventive puzzles, charming design, and the ability to teach chess concepts in the process make it a standout release. With a fresh take on the classic game of chess, appealing even to those who aren’t traditional chess enthusiasts, Minimol Games has crafted a standout puzzle game for chess enthusiasts.
