TopSpin 2K25 review (PS5)

After over a decade-long hiatus, the TopSpin series makes a successful return with TopSpin 2K25, published by 2K Games and developed by Hangar 13. As tennis enthusiasts, it feels like the genre peaked with Virtua Tennis and Top Spin, with the last major entries in the latter series dating back to 2011. However, TopSpin 2K25 injects new life into the genre with its revamped gameplay mechanics, star-studded roster, and extensive MyCareer campaign. We took to the tennis court on a PlayStation 5.

One of the standout gameplay features of TopSpin 2K25 is its revamped swing meter, which adds a new layer of challenge and strategy to the gameplay. Mastering the timing of shots is crucial, and the game provides clear feedback on your performance, ensuring that success feels earned rather than arbitrary. However, while the gameplay mechanics are solid overall, some may find the learning curve steep initially – especially if you’re not familiar with TopSpin’s brand of tennis gameplay.

The game offers a diverse roster of over 24 playable pros, including legends like Roger Federer and Serena Williams, as well as current stars like Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek. The inclusion of both male and female athletes also allows for mixed doubles matches and more diverse gameplay experiences. As longtime fans, it’s great to see the likes of Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, John McEnroe and Steffi Graf here as well – players who’ve left their mark but haven’t featured in games in the past decade or so.

In terms of game modes, TopSpin 2K25 offers a comprehensive MyCareer mode, where players can create their own tennis prodigy and guide them through the ranks of the professional circuit. But while the MyCareer mode provides depth and longevity, with various goals and challenges to complete, some aspects of character development feel limited. Coaches and racket fittings offer stat bonuses, but the system for acquiring and equipping them could be more flexible.

Visually, TopSpin 2K25 impresses with smooth animations and lifelike character models, although there are some shortcomings such as repetitive crowd NPCs and lackluster cutscenes, as well as facial animations that fall short of what we see in the NBA 2K franchise. Despite these minor flaws, the game succeeds in capturing the essence of professional tennis, with realistic venues and authentic player likenesses.

Overall, TopSpin 2K25 is a promising reboot that brings tennis simulations back into the spotlight. While it may not have all the bells and whistles of other sports games in terms of presentation and features, its focus on solid gameplay mechanics and extensive career mode make it a worthwhile addition to any tennis fan’s collection. With its challenging gameplay, diverse roster, and immersive career mode, TopSpin 2K25 is a must-play for anyone with a passion for the sport and hopefully a great sign of things to come for the franchise.
