Turnip Boy Robs a Bank review (Xbox)

In a criminal underworld where vegetables play the lead roles, Turnip Boy returns. His latest escapade, Turnip Boy Robs a Bank, developed by Snoozy Kazoo and published by Graffiti Games, it out now on PC, Switch and Xbox. The comedic action-adventure takes a turn towards the roguelite genre, offering players a chance to partake in the weirdest bank heist of all time alongside the fearsome Pickled Gang. As you embark on this felonious journey, you’ll engage in a single-player adventures filled with roguelite elements that spice up the action as well as a massive botanical bank to explore and loot.

The game introduces players to a simple yet engaging gameplay loop: set up your upcoming heist in your hideaway, venture into the bank, shake down hostages, face off against security guards and elite veggie swat teams, and loot the valuables before getting out. While the premise is amusing, more variety in the bank’s layout would have been welcome, as things have a tendency to start looking a tad repetitive after a few rounds of bank heisting. The time-limited runs create a sense of urgency though, forcing players to balance speed and exploration and not let them worry too long about whether or not they’ve seen something before.

The progression system, fueled by the cash earned from each heist, offers upgrades ranging from health and damage boosts to quirky hats, enhancing the overall experience. However, a worry emerges regarding the ease of accumulating wealth, leading to rapid progression and perhaps diluting the challenge, particularly in the game’s relatively short five-hour playtime. Your mileage may differ, but experienced players might find the balance to be slightly off.

The arsenal of weapons is impressive though, providing a good variety that adds flair and creativity to the turnip’s criminal activities. From conch shell notes to a frog gun, each weapon brings a unique touch to the gameplay. The blend of humor, evident in the game’s internet-inspired choices, may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but for those in tune with Turnip Boy’s humor, it contributes to the game’s charm and light-hearted narrative.

While the game’s main story delivers laughs and enjoyment, we also wish there was more content – which is of course often a challenge with roguelite designs. Combined with a short campaign length, we wish there was more Turnip Boy to this one.

Visually, the 2D pixel art maintains the charm of the original game, and the quirky characters continue to entertain. The soundtrack, with its high-energy tunes, adds to the overall experience.

In conclusion, Turnip Boy Robs a Bank successfully retains the wit and charm of its predecessor. The engaging gameplay loop, large weapon variety, and humorous narrative contribute to an enjoyable experience, despite our wish for more content. While the roguelite elements enhance replayability, the game’s brevity will leave players craving additional adventures. Luckily, that also means that Snoozy Kazoo’s formula works, and we’re hoping for more exciting escapades in the future.
