Clash II review (PC)

We weren’t familiar with the first game, but Prime Bit Games’ Clash II caught our eye as a turn-based strategy game set in a fantasy realm. Here, players delve into a forgotten land, gather and train their armies, fortify their stronghold, and make pivotal decisions that will shape the fate of the continent. We checked out the game, which is out on PC now.

At its core, Clash II offers classic turn-based battles that evoke nostalgia for the classics like the old Heroes of Might and Magic games. Players command their troops in tactical encounters against enemy armies and imposing monsters, utilizing their unique abilities to gain the upper hand. The simultaneous movement of units adds depth to the strategic gameplay, allowing for dynamic battlefield maneuvers when you plan your moves correctly.

As mentioned, the game also features a castle management aspect, where you have to construct and upgrade buildings to recruit powerful units and enhance your economy. This aspect adds depth to the gameplay, while exploration is also a key component of Clash II. A character-driven campaign guides the story forward, in which the ancient continent of Karkhan is richly detailed. You can uncover artifacts or run into magical creatures while you unravel the history of the conflict that’s currently raging.

Visually, Clash II features stylized and detailed graphics that draw players into the game’s fantastical world and its state of turmoil. The atmospheric soundtrack enhances the immersive experience, evoking a sense of adventure and wonder as players traverse the wilderness of Karkhan. Some of the UI elements can become hard to read when playing on larger display and/or higher resolutions though, which is something to factor in.

But despite its enchanting atmosphere and engaging gameplay, Clash II is not without its flaws. Despite having been in Early Access before, we still ran into a few gameplay bugs and a few instances where combat felt somewhat imbalanced. We’re hoping the developers will continue to tweak the game post-launch though, as they’ve already made massive strides since the Early Access days.

Overall, Clash II is an engaging turn-based strategy game that pays homage to classics in the genre. With its immersive world, strategic depth, and potential for further refinement, it’s an enjoyable experience for fans of the genre, despite a few rough edges. We’re hoping to see some more post-launch development, and it’s a game worth noticing.
