SpellForce: Conquest of Eo: Demon Scourge review (PC)

In Demon Scourge, the new expansion for the excellent SpellForce: Conquest of Eo, players are thrust into a realm threatened by a demonic invasion, setting the stage for an expansion that introduces the Demonologist class. This allows players to delve into the dark arts of demon summoning and manipulation, adding more depth and strategy to the gameplay. With the ability to establish demonic cults, summon powerful demons, and possess units with infernal entities, players can unleash the forces of hell upon their foes, creating new, exciting and distinctly evil avenues for conquest.

One of the standout features of Demon Scourge is its introduction of the Troll faction, offering a new and challenging addition to the game’s dynamic. As players navigate the shifting alliances and conflicts between demons, trolls, and other factions, they’re faced with strategic decisions that can impact the fate of the world. The expansion breathes new life into the game’s narrative as well, providing engaging new storylines and atmospheric set pieces that immerse players in the already rich lore of the SpellForce universe.

However, despite its many strengths, the expansion also grapples with some relatively repetitive early-game chores to get through, something that was also in the base game. Yet, these minor drawbacks are overshadowed by the wealth of content and gameplay enhancements introduced by Demon Scourge, which features over 120 new adventures, 25 fresh units, and a host of new promotions and win conditions. This offers ample opportunities for players to explore and conquer the world of Eo in exciting new ways, as well as a good reason to return to the game.

Overall, SpellForce: Conquest of Eo – Demon Scourge stands as a testament to the ongoing evolution of the game and franchise, providing both seasoned veterans and newcomers alike with a compelling reason to revisit the SpellForce universe. With its engaging gameplay mechanics, immersive storytelling, and wealth of content, the expansion offers fantastic value for players looking to expand their SpellForce experience and embark on a thrilling journey and embrace the darker side of this fantasy realm.

Railway Empire 2 – Journey To The East review (PS5)

Railway Empire 2’s Journey to the East DLC takes players on an ambitious venture to connect European capitals to the Ottoman Empire, presenting a challenging yet rewarding endeavor set in the late 1800s. As players expand their enterprise from Vienna to Constantinople, they’ll encounter towering mountains, rough terrains, and bustling cities that present both challenges and opportunities. The DLC introduces a new and fully voiced scenario called “Journey to the East,” offering a fresh narrative experience that immerses players in the era of entrepreneurs and the prospect of unimagined riches.

While the DLC introduces interesting new features such as the Luxury Rail Line mechanic and exotic luxury goods like golden honey, the pricing for the expansion could be an issue. Priced at €10/$10 for one map, some players might feel that it’s overpriced compared to the cost (and content) of the main game. Part of that is that Journey to the East doesn’t change too much outside of the new map, so if you play in existing areas it’ll largely be the same game as before. We also had a few instances where the AI struggled a bit with getting through areas with a lot of mountains, but we assume these things can be tweaked in a patch.

On the positive side, the DLC does offer a massive map with around 50 cities and a plethora of rural areas, presenting players with a substantial challenge to overcome within a tight budget. And looking past small AI issues, the reintroduction of severe mountainous terrain adds depth and complexity to gameplay, requiring players to strategize and adapt their routes to overcome obstacles. Furthermore, the addition of new train models, research options, products, and (excellent) music enhances the overall immersion and variety of the game, offering players new opportunities for exploration and discovery.

Looking past the pricing, Journey to the East is a compelling expansion for Railway Empire 2, providing players with many hours of engaging gameplay and a fresh perspective on a specific age and area of railway expansion. While the DLC may not be suitable for newcomers due to its difficulty level, building on what you already know, seasoned players will find plenty to enjoy as they embark on an epic journey across Eastern Europe.

Pinball M – System Shock Pinball review (PS5)

Zen Studios had delivered another intense adult-themed experience to their Pinball M platform with the release of the System Shock Pinball DLC. This new table plunges players into the dark and dangerous world of Citadel Station, which has been overrun by the malevolent AI SHODAN and her horde of deadly adversaries. Set against the backdrop of the cult classic sci-fi horror game from Looking Glass Nightdive Studios, this table presents a challenging journey through the more terrifying environments of System Shock. Players must navigate the treacherous Cyberspace Terminal, a unique mini-playfield that captures the essence of cyberpunk aesthetics while posing them with new challenges to overcome.

The DLC faithfully recreates the atmosphere and lore of System Shock, offering fans of the original game and its 2023 remake plenty of nods and references to enjoy – reigniting our desire for a proper follow-up in the series. From the sinister voice acting of SHODAN to the iconic sound effects and music, every detail contributes to the immersive experience, pulling players into the world of System Shock even though it’s “just pinball”. Climbing the tower and completing objectives evoke a sense of satisfaction and progression, while the relatively easy recoveries ensure that gameplay remains fluid and engaging.

But while the DLC excels in capturing the essence of System Shock, there are limitations in terms of how varied the content is, with the table primarily focusing on the Medical level of the game. This makes sense when you consider that it’s a pinball conversion of an originally large game, but it’s worth mentioning. Despite this, the DLC delivers a solid pinball experience with familiar modes and objectives, including hacking, attacking enemies, and navigating through cyberspace.

Overall, the System Shock Pinball DLC stands out as a great addition to Pinball M’s relatively small lineup, offering players an immersive journey through the iconic world of System Shock. With its faithful recreation of the game’s atmosphere and engaging gameplay mechanics, this DLC is sure to delight fans of the franchise and pinball enthusiasts alike, and makes us look forward to what comes next. Dead Space pinball, anyone?
