Indie roundup: Prisonela DX, Unlife, Froggie & Caveman Ransom

In our latest roundup of recent indie game releases, we’re reviewing Prisonela DX, Unlife, Froggie – A Retro Platformer and Caveman Ransom – all of which were released on all major console platforms.

Prisonela DX review (PS5)

Prisonela DX offers a familiar yet somewhat fresh blend of precision platforming and roguelike elements, presenting players with challenging levels that demand quick reflexes and good timing. Set in a minimalist world devoid of narrative depth, the game focuses solely on completing short, obstacle-filled levels. And while the lack of story might be disappointing to some, it’s the type of game you can just pick up and play where the game randomly selects the order of the levels for you.

Visually, Prisonela DX employs a familiar pixel art style, especially if you’re no stranger to Ratalaika’s catalogue. The soundtrack is a tad repetitive though, and the presence of graphical glitches doesn’t help either.

Gameplay-wise, Prisonela DX offers intense platforming challenges, with each death resulting in an immediate respawn. While this quick respawn system works well in keeping the flow going, the game’s unforgiving nature and strict collision detection can also lead to frustration. Additionally, the randomized level selection system may leave players feeling aimless, lacking a sense of accomplishment or progression beyond collecting the associated trophies.

In summary, Prisonela DX provides a challenging platforming experience with its blend of precision mechanics and roguelike elements. While its simplistic gameplay and retro visuals may appeal to fans of the genre, the lack of meaningful progression and repetitive nature may deter others. Ultimately, it’s a game best enjoyed in short bursts for those seeking intense platforming action for an hour or two.

Unlife review (PS5)

In Unlife, players dive into a post-apocalyptic 2D world with mutated creatures and toxic waters, setting the stage for a dark and mysterious journey. The game’s premise, centered around the last survivor’s quest for healing and salvation amidst a world ravaged by nuclear conflict, offers a compelling backdrop for exploration and survival. However, while the story holds promise, it’s hindered by inconsistent translation and grammatical errors, detracting from the immersion and coherence of the narrative.

Visually, Unlife boasts an interesting hand-drawn art style, infusing the game with a unique and atmospheric aesthetic. But despite its visual charm, the game suffers from a few flaws in execution, particularly in gameplay mechanics and controls. Players will regularly find themselves frustrated by awkward movements, unresponsive buttons, and erratic character handling, diminishing the overall experience and immersion by feeling rough around the edges.

Gameplay-wise, Unlife attempts to blend elements of platforming, twin-stick shooting, and survival, offering a diverse range of challenges and encounters. However, the execution falls short of expectations, with tedious combat, unfair difficulty spikes, and confusing level design undermining the game’s potential for engaging gameplay. Despite its initial appeal, Unlife struggles to deliver a cohesive and enjoyable experience, plagued by technical issues and design flaws.

In conclusion, Unlife presents an intriguing concept set within a visually striking world, but ultimately fails to deliver on its promise due to a lack of polish. While the game may appeal to fans of atmospheric adventures, its shortcomings prevent it from realizing its full potential. Unlife falls short of expectations, and its compelling visuals cannot compensate for its flaws in gameplay and design.

Froggie – A Retro Platformer review (PS5)

Froggie presents a simple yet challenging retro platformer experience, where players navigate through 100 levels filled with obstacles, enemies, and spikes. With no fancy abilities like double jumps or dashes, the game relies on classic platforming mechanics, instead emphasizing precise timing and skillful maneuvering. Despite its minimalist approach, Froggie’s straightforward gameplay and nostalgic art style somehow work and give it charm.

The game strikes a balance between difficulty and accessibility, offering a challenge that’s not too easy but not overly punishing either. While it may stump and frustrate players at times, you should expect to complete the game in under two hours. The straightforward nature of Froggie also lends itself to being a good choice for trophy hunters, making it an appealing option for those seeking a quick yet satisfying platforming experience.

However, Froggie’s simplicity also limits its replayability, with its short length and lack of additional features like time tracking or leaderboards. While the game delivers on its promise of providing a hard yet enjoyable retro platforming experience, it may leave players craving more depth and variety in level design. Despite these shortcomings, Froggie is a budget production at a budget price that’s worth playing.

Caveman Ransom review (PS5)

Caveman Ransom takes players on a nostalgic journey back to the era of classic 16-bit platformers, reminiscent of titles like Prehistorik. The game follows the tale of Ooga, a bearded caveman on a mission to rescue his grandfather from the clutches of bandit cavemen. With its charming pixel art and chiptune soundtrack, the game successfully captures the essence of retro gaming, evoking fond memories of the carefree 2D platforming adventures of the 1990s.

In terms of gameplay, Caveman Ransom offers a mix of platforming challenges, boss battles, and item collection mechanics. Players must navigate through 50 levels filled with dinosaurs, wild monsters, and deadly traps while honing their skills to defeat five bosses. The inclusion of various thrown weapons adds a small amount of depth to the combat system, allowing players to enhance their strength as they progress through the game. Additionally, the shop feature provides opportunities to spend collected coins and level up, adding a layer of progression to the experience.

While the game excels in delivering a nostalgic platforming experience, younger players may find its challenge level to be a bit steep. However, for fans of old-school platformers seeking a dose of retro gaming, Caveman Ransom offers a nostalgic adventure filled with charming visuals, catchy tunes, and classic platforming action.
