KARMA: The Dark World preview

KARMA: The Dark World draws you into a dystopian version of 1984 East Germany, where the omnipresent Leviathan Corporation controls every aspect of life. Developed by Pollard Studio and published by Wired Productions, this first-person psychological thriller blends a captivating narrative with mind-bending environments. During our time with the PC version at Gamescom, we got to explore the dark corridors of this alternate reality, where mystery, espionage, and immersive storytelling come together.

What we know

KARMA: The Dark World is set in an alternate 1984, where the Leviathan Corporation exerts total control over its citizens through surveillance, societal restrictions, and mind-altering substances. Players step into the shoes of Daniel McGovern, a Roam Agent working for Leviathan’s Thought Bureau. McGovern is tasked with diving into the minds of suspects to solve crimes and report his findings, but things are never as straightforward as they seem. The memories Daniel explores are filled with twisted environments, surreal horrors, and blurred lines between reality and imagination.

The game blends investigative puzzles with intense psychological elements, where players will use advanced tools to reconstruct crime scenes, question suspects, and navigate the dangerous landscape of the human mind. With Unreal Engine 5 powering the game, KARMA: The Dark World promises next-gen visuals, combining Lumen and Nanite technology to create highly detailed environments. The game is launching on PC, with console versions expected to follow. Its intricate storyline explores themes of control, deception, and the balance between truth and perception.

What we saw

At Gamescom, we had the opportunity to go hands-on with KARMA: The Dark World during a demo with Wired Productions. We played through a story sequence that involved solving puzzles, with an option for assistance (from the devs) if needed. This gave us a closer look at how the game combines its narrative elements with the brain-diving mechanic, where solving puzzles and piecing together the narrative go hand in hand.

What we thought

From the moment we started exploring, the atmosphere was striking, with dark, dystopian visuals that are a testament to the power of Unreal Engine 5. The game’s environments are dripping with atmosphere, filled with subtle details that build a world both oppressive and mysterious. The visual quality is nothing short of stunning, with detailed environments that feel deeply immersive, and the sense of scale, particularly in the memory dive sequences, adds to the game’s unsettling ambiance. Fans of Philip K. Dick’s stories will find themselves drawn to the game’s premise, which feels heavily influenced by classic dystopian and psychological themes.

The narrative, at least from what we experienced in the demo, felt engaging and full of mystery. KARMA: The Dark World isn’t just about solving puzzles – it’s about unraveling a deeper story that is as much about Daniel’s own past as it is about the people he’s investigating. The interaction with characters and suspects, along with the decisions you make, adds a layer of complexity that will likely keep players intrigued from start to finish. There’s a strong sense of intrigue, and the game constantly makes you question what is real and what is illusion.

However, some aspects of the gameplay left us wondering how accessible the puzzle elements would be. While the option to receive help was welcome during our session, we can foresee some players getting stuck due to the possibly somewhat random nature of certain puzzle solutions. This could break the pacing for those who are less inclined to trial and error, though it’s possible this could be addressed with clearer clues in the full game.

In terms of audio, the game excels in creating an immersive soundscape that complements its visuals. The soundtrack, especially when combined with a surround sound setup, is an experience in itself. From subtle environmental sounds to intense musical cues during key narrative moments, everything about the audio design enhances the cinematic feel of the game.

Overall, KARMA: The Dark World has all the elements of a gripping psychological thriller with its dark, immersive world and engaging narrative. While the puzzles could pose a challenge to some players, those who enjoy piecing together intricate stories and navigating morally ambiguous worlds will find plenty to enjoy here.
