The shoot-’em-up genre has seen a resurgence in recent years, bringing classic arcade experiences to modern platforms as well as seeing an explosion of indie releases in the genre. Under Defeat, originally developed by G.rev, is the latest to join this wave, now arriving on PlayStation 5 in what’s being dubbed a ‘definitive edition’. Having first debuted in arcades in 2005 and later making its way to the Dreamcast and other previous console generations, the game retains its old-school appeal while introducing enhancements that help it feel fresh. It’s one of the most polished arcade shooters you’ll find, and it’s great to have it back.
Set in an alternate-history World War II scenario, Under Defeat places players in the cockpit of a heavily armed combat helicopter, tasked with turning the tide of war. Unlike many modern bullet-hell shooters, the game adopts a more tactical approach, requiring players to carefully maneuver their aircraft while managing limited aiming angles. Instead of a full 360-degree aiming system, the helicopter’s nose can only rotate within a 45-degree cone, adding a layer of precision and strategy. This mechanic forces players to position themselves carefully in order to land effective shots while dodging incoming enemy fire at the same time.
Visually, Under Defeat stands out with its detailed destruction effects, from crumbling buildings to smoke billowing from downed enemies. The environmental interactions add a sense of weight to the combat, making battles feel impactful. While the original was a technical achievement for its time, the remaster introduces improved visuals and smoother performance, bringing the action to life on modern hardware. However, some elements, like simplistic 3D models, still reflect the game’s roots and may feel dated to players expecting a full graphical overhaul.
Gameplay-wise, the title offers multiple modes, including the classic Arcade mode and the remastered New Order mode, which expands the screen for a wider view. The challenge remains steep, with limited continues and relentless enemy waves demanding quick reflexes and precise movement. A Practice Mode is available to help players hone their skills, while leaderboards encourage competitive score-chasing. The game’s length is short, featuring only five stages, but the depth in its mechanics and scoring system provides ample reason for repeated playthroughs.
The audio experience is another highlight, with four selectable soundtracks, including a new remixed version by Shinji Hosoe. Each option adds a different feel to the game, allowing players to tailor the experience to their preference. The radio chatter during missions also helps sell the battlefield atmosphere, though it remains a mostly aesthetic touch rather than a gameplay feature. While Under Defeat may not have the mainstream appeal of other shooters, it excels at delivering a rewarding and strategic shmup experience for dedicated fans of the genre. Its blend of tactical gameplay, high-quality destruction effects, and intense challenge makes it a must-play for enthusiasts looking to relive an arcade classic in its most refined form.
