What Have You Done, Father? review (PS5)

Psychological horror often leans heavily on monsters, jump scares, or relentless pursuit sequences, but What Have You Done, Father? takes a more introspective route. Developed and published by Darkania Works, this short narrative thriller places players in the role of Father Mathias Marton, a priest whose moral failings and personal weaknesses become entangled with a murder mystery that gradually spirals into something stranger and more unsettling. Set largely within the confines of a rectory haunted by both literal and metaphorical ghosts, the game explores themes of guilt, temptation, faith, and redemption while maintaining a deliberately uneasy atmosphere throughout.

The narrative is easily the game’s strongest asset. Rather than presenting a straightforward horror story, it slowly peels back layers of mystery through environmental storytelling, conversations, diary entries, and collected notes. The central premise immediately grabs attention, and the story remains engaging thanks to a series of twists that keep players questioning both the truth of events and the reliability of what they are witnessing. The mature subject matter gives the plot a distinctive identity, though some of the early ‘erotic’ content feels less essential than the game appears to believe. While temptation and desire are important thematic pillars, several scenes risk creating expectations that the remainder of the story does not really follow through on, resulting in occasional tonal inconsistencies.

Gameplay revolves primarily around exploration and investigation. Players search rooms, inspect objects, collect clues, and solve a handful of light puzzles while progressing through a largely linear structure. This approach works well because the game’s focus remains firmly on storytelling, and objectives are generally easy to understand. At the same time, the limited interactivity means that those looking for deeper mechanics may find the experience closer to a walking simulator than a traditional horror adventure. A few collectible items and optional discoveries encourage exploration, but replay value remains relatively limited beyond completionist pursuits.

The controls on PlayStation 5 fit the game’s straightforward design, allowing players to move through environments and interact with objects without much friction. However, some of the investigative elements occasionally feel more cumbersome than they should. Important items can blend into the scenery, leading to moments of backtracking as players search for the next trigger required to advance the story. The game’s chapter-based structure helps soften some of these frustrations, but a more refined approach to object visibility and progression cues could have improved the overall pacing.

Visually, What Have You Done, Father? is impressive given its relatively small scope. The rectory and its surrounding spaces are packed with detail, creating an environment that feels convincingly lived in while simultaneously radiating unease. Lighting is used effectively to create tension, and the game’s blend of religious imagery, decaying interiors, and surreal horror elements helps establish a memorable identity. Character models occasionally look somewhat artificial due to their unusually smooth appearance, but this is a relatively minor issue in an otherwise strong presentation as the game’s visual quality often exceeds expectations for a project of this scale.

Audio contributes significantly to the atmosphere. Ambient sounds, sparse music, and selected voice performances help sustain a feeling of dread without resorting to constant shocks. Several sequences demonstrate a keen understanding of psychological horror, relying on discomfort and anticipation rather than outright scares. The downside is that voice acting is not consistently present throughout the experience, creating occasional transitions between fully voiced scenes and text-heavy sections that can feel uneven. Even so, the sound design succeeds in reinforcing the game’s strongest moments and elevating the overall sense of immersion.

What Have You Done, Father? is not a flawless experience. Its short runtime, occasional pacing issues, and questionable use of some mature content prevent it from reaching the heights of the genre’s best narrative adventures. Yet Darkania Works succeeds in crafting a compelling psychological thriller that remains memorable even after its final revelations. By combining an intriguing mystery, strong atmosphere, effective environmental storytelling, and surprisingly polished production values, the game delivers a focused horror experience that will likely resonate with players who appreciate slow-burn narratives and morally uncomfortable subject matter. For those willing to embrace its peculiarities, this is a disturbing and often fascinating journey into sin, guilt, and the search for redemption.
