Diablo IV review (PS5)

Diablo IV, the long-awaited sequel to the beloved action role-playing game franchise, has finally arrived. Published by Activision Blizzard, this installment takes players 50 years into the future after the events of Diablo III: Reaper of Souls. The world of Sanctuary is once again under threat, this time from the summoning of Lilith, the Daughter of Hatred. The game offers a customizable gameplay experience, with players choosing from five classes and embarking on a journey to combat the demonic forces and restore peace to Sanctuary. We journeyed into the depths of Hell on a PlayStation 5.

One of the standout features of Diablo IV is its expansive open-world design. Players can explore a diverse range of environments, from sprawling landscapes to dark and dangerous dungeons. This new approach adds a fresh element to the series, making the world feel interconnected and immersive. Additionally, the game introduces public events as well – somewhat similar to live service games like Destiny, emphasizing cooperative gameplay and creating a shared experience with other players.

With the gameplay staying true to the gameplay formula of the 20+ year old franchise, the premise and narrative of Diablo IV are worth exploring to see if there’s innovation on that front. In Diablo IV, the more nuanced storytelling and the complex portrayal of Lilith are a change from the more linear storytelling of previous games, though at the same time players will find that the tone of the game is excessively grim this time around – even compared to other Diablo games. The game leans heavily into fantasy cliches too, but its dark and atmospheric setting remains true to the Diablo universe that’s so well-established and beloved.

In terms of gameplay mechanics, Diablo IV builds upon its predecessors while introducing some new elements. The core hack ‘n’ slash action is familiar and satisfying, with the addition of greater customization options for abilities. Players can experiment with up to six skills at a time, unlocking more as they progress. The freedom to choose and respec abilities adds depth to character development. The loot system, an iconic staple of the series, remains a significant motivator, with legendary weapons and the introduction of Aspects providing exciting rewards.

Visually, Diablo IV presents a mixed bag. The open-world environments are visually appealing, but character models in cutscenes can appear disappointingly basic – which is unfortunate when you consider how awe-inspiring the cutscenes in Diablo II were back in the day. The game strikes a balance between impressive visuals from a distance and the occasional lack of detail up close. The audio design, including the atmospheric soundtrack and sound effects, effectively adds to the dark and immersive experience – making this a good game to play on a large screen with the lights turned down and everything connected to surround speakers.

Diablo IV’s endgame content offers robust activities to further engage players. From challenging Helltide events and Nightmare Dungeons to the Whispers of the Dead and Fields of Hatred, there is plenty to do beyond the main storyline. The regular release of seasons and expansions ensures a continuous flow of new features, quests, characters, challenges, and legendary loot. However, the live service elements and the potential pricing of in-game items have the potential to be divisive here, and it’ll be interesting to see how they’ll move forward with Diablo IV post-launch..

In summary, Diablo IV successfully builds upon the Diablo formula, providing a fan-pleasing sequel with an expansive open-world structure and enhanced character customization. While the core gameplay remains largely unchanged, the addition of new mechanics and the sheer amount of loot and upgrade options make this installment more ambitious and interesting than its predecessor. The game’s dark and hopeless tone may not resonate with everyone, and the live service (and always-online) elements will raise valid concerns. Nevertheless, Diablo IV is a highly enjoyable and addictive action role-playing game that will captivate both newcomers and long-time fans of the series.
