Fate/Samurai Remnant review (PS5)

In the ever-expanding universe of Fate, where historical legends clash for their deepest desires, Fate/Samurai Remnant is the latest release – a fusion of RPG and musou gameplay styles, showcasing Omega Force’s mastery of the latter in a new way. Set in the Edo period of Japan, players step into the shoes of Miyamoto Iori, a ronin whose fate takes a drastic turn in a mysterious ritual known as the Waxing Moon. As Iori and his mysterious servant Saber, you’ll embark on a dangerous journey, where the pair must navigate a web of intricate alliances and fierce adversaries. We checked the game out on a PlayStation 5.

The game’s narrative unfolds against the backdrop of ancient Japan, blending historical figures with elements of mythology for an interesting mix. With a lot of attention to detail, the game weaves a tapestry of engaging character dynamics, making each encounter and conversation a pivotal part of the storytelling experience – thus enriching the interactions you have. The relationship between Iori and Saber is a standout as well, evolving with depth and meaning throughout the story campaign.

Fate/Samurai Remnant introduces a combat system that transcends the standard musou fare you might already be familiar with. The ability to switch between stances adds layers of strategy, enabling players to adapt to different enemy types and situations. Iori’s seamless transition between swordplay and magic, coupled with Saber’s formidable combat prowess, ensures that battles are dynamic, engaging, and continually evolving – it’s far more engaging than just button mashing your way through hundreds of enemies.

The game’s rendition of ancient Japan is visually gorgeous. From bustling urban districts to serene landscapes, every location exudes authenticity and vitality. The inclusion of real-life historical figures, reimagined with a supernatural twist, adds an extra layer of intrigue. Notably, the animation of Servant battles is nothing short of breathtaking, capturing the essence of Fate’s awe-inspiring Noble Phantasms. But while technically sound, Fate/Samurai Remnant could benefit from smoother transitions and reduced loading screens, even on the PS5.

The RPG elements shine through with a solid progression system. Leveling up, skill allocation, and equipment customization provide a sense of agency in honing Iori and Saber’s abilities. The depth of the skill tree and the potential for weapon upgrades further enhance the player’s sense of growth and mastery, and if you go back in for a second playthrough there’s plenty of opportunity to take a very different path.

One aspect that occasionally detracts from the otherwise excellent combat experience is the camera’s sometimes erratic behavior, which isn’t uncommon in this genre. The camera can momentarily obstruct visibility, leading to moments of frustration, particularly in fast-paced encounters. Improved camera controls would greatly enhance the overall gameplay experience, so we’re hoping for a few post-launch tweaks there.

For newcomers to the genre, the game’s first few chapters may feel overwhelming due to the sheer volume of information on techniques, mechanics and items that gets presented then. There’s a lot to this game, and the learning process might be a tad steep for players looking for an accessible and streamlined adventure. And while the narrative for the game is a standout feature, the abundance of dialogue, especially in non-essential conversations, may pose a challenge for players seeking a more action-oriented experience.

Fate/Samurai Remnant stands as an exceptional addition to the Fate series, seamlessly blending captivating storytelling with dynamic combat. Its masterful portrayal of historical figures, combined with strategic gameplay and a vibrant world, ensures an experience that will leave a lasting mark on fans and newcomers alike. While minor improvements in camera controls and pacing could elevate the experience even higher, the game undeniably ranks among the standout action titles of 2023.
