Mechs V Kaijus review (PS5)

Mechs V Kaijus, developed by Doble Punch Games and published by JanduSoft, has stomped onto consoles after its initial PC release in 2018. This tower-defense game places you in command of a formidable squadron of mechs, defending against relentless waves of colossal Kaijus. How does this high-octane showdown fare on the PlayStation 5? Let’s delve into the battle.

In Mechs V Kaijus, you assume the role of a Commander overseeing a squadron of powerful mechs defending the city from monstrous Kaijus. The gameplay layout, reminiscent of titles like Plants vs. Zombies, positions your units on the left and the Kaijus advancing from the right. This setup creates a dynamic and engaging battlefield where strategic placement is key to survival.

The game’s main hook is a blend of MOBA elements, base defense, and shoot ’em up mechanics. This fusion of genres attempts to breathe new life into the tower-defense concept, which in the past decade has of course been done to death. The ability to strategically deploy towers and traps, coupled with commanding mechs in real-time, adds depth and complexity to the gameplay of Mechs V Kaijus.

But while the game translates well from PC to consoles, some elements of the UI still feel like they were designed with keyboard and mouse input in mind. This occasionally leads to minor confusion, where things don’t feel quite as intuitive as we would’ve liked. You’ll get used to it after a while, but this is an area where they could’ve optimized further when porting this to consoles.

Mechs V Kaijus employs a retro-inspired pixel art style, which is a familiar choice in contemporary indie gaming. Despite the visual density during heated battles, the action remains reasonably clear, though occasional off-screen enemies pose a minor challenge in terms of targeting them effectively. The game’s sound design stands out as well, featuring a robust soundtrack complemented by timely announcements of ability cooldowns, enhancing the overall immersion.

The extensive upgrade system offers diverse strategic options, allowing players to experiment and fine-tune their approach to battles while mixing up the way that the game’s mechanics work over time. However, some porting-related bugs hinder the experience, and a reliance on grinding for progression may test some players’ patience – especially if they’re not used to playing similar titles.

Mechs V Kaijus delivers a fun tower-defense experience, combining MOBA, base defense, and shoot ’em up elements seamlessly. The upgrade system offers a wealth of strategic possibilities, though there is too much reliance on grinding and the gameplay experience could have been tweaked a little better to make this more of a standout title in the genre.

Score: 6.5/10
