Shattered by PlaySide Studios delivers an innovative twist on escape room experiences by blending virtual and mixed reality, as part of the current wave of MR titles coming out for the Quest. As you navigate its narrative that takes place within the confines of a mental health facility, the game asks players to question their perceptions while manipulating their real-world environment to progress. The concept is really intriguing and often well-executed, but as an early title in this genre there are some rough edges as well.
The narrative in Shattered revolves around uncovering the secrets of the Greyvale facility while grappling with distorted memories and unreliable perceptions. The eerie atmosphere is heightened by cryptic environmental storytelling and cleverly integrated puzzles that push players to reconsider the boundaries between reality and illusion – for which Mixed Reality is used to great effect. But although the setup is compelling, the storyline occasionally leans too heavily on ambiguity, leaving us wishing for a clearer sense of progression and resolution at times.
The core gameplay stands out due to its innovative use of mixed reality, transforming your physical environment into an interactive puzzle space. By utilizing walls, floors, and ceilings, Shattered crafts a dynamic playspace that blurs the line between virtual objects and real-world surroundings. This approach fosters creativity and immersion, but it also relies on having an uncluttered, spacious area to fully appreciate its mechanics. Players with limited physical space may find the experience more frustrating than engaging, as the game doesn’t always adapt smoothly to smaller setups and we found we had a better time after moving some furniture, which isn’t an (desirable) option for everyone.

Looking past its impressive MR angle, the puzzle design is where Shattered shines, offering a mix of intuitive and complex challenges that reward exploration and attention to detail. The use of memories to alter environments and uncover clues is both a novel mechanic and a fitting thematic touch. However, some puzzles suffer from uneven difficulty spikes, occasionally interrupting the flow of the experience.
Visually, the game’s aesthetic combines your home environment with surreal overlays that reflect the fractured mental state of the game’s protagonist. The graphical fidelity is solid for the Meta Quest platform, but the mixed reality visuals can sometimes appear inconsistent, particularly in poorly lit or cluttered physical spaces. The sound design complements the unsettling atmosphere, with ambient audio cues and an appropriately moody score, though some voiceovers feel slightly underwhelming in terms of emotional delivery.
Controls are intuitive for the most part, with smooth integration of hand tracking and standard VR interactions. However, occasional tracking hiccups – particularly when interacting with objects close to the edges of your playspace or when you get close to real-life clutter – can detract from the immersion. These moments are rare but noticeable, especially during more intricate puzzle sequences.
Overall, Shattered is a bold experiment in mixed reality gaming that successfully merges environmental manipulation with engaging puzzles. While its innovative use of physical space sets it apart, the experience isn’t without its challenges. Players with ample room to explore and an appreciation for abstract storytelling will find much to enjoy here, but those with limited space or a preference for straightforward narratives may encounter some hurdles. Despite its imperfections, Shattered showcases the potential of mixed reality in crafting unique gaming experiences, leaving players eager to see how the genre evolves from here. Despite its rougher edges, it’s a showcase title we definitely recommend checking out.
