FANTASIAN Neo Dimension review (PS5)

Hironobu Sakaguchi’s FANTASIAN Neo Dimension brings the acclaimed Mistwalker RPG to the PlayStation 5 with enhanced visuals, voice acting, and new gameplay features. It retains the charm of the original, but this updated version also offers a fresh perspective on the game’s narrative and mechanics, appealing to both returning players and newcomers alike.

The story of FANTASIAN Neo Dimension revolves around Leo, a protagonist navigating a world ravaged by the mysterious Mechteria infection. This mechanical plague strips humanity of emotions, setting the stage for an epic journey across interdimensional landscapes to recover Leo’s memories and thwart the advancing decay. The narrative balances nostalgia for classic JRPG storytelling with modern flourishes, aided by the inclusion of voice acting in both English and Japanese. But while the overarching plot is compelling, some players might find its pacing uneven, with moments of lengthy exposition sometimes overshadowing character development.

Gameplay-wise, the battle system stands out with its unique trajectory mechanics, allowing players to draw enemies into skill paths for maximum efficiency. This innovative approach adds a strategic layer to encounters, though it occasionally feels underutilized against less challenging foes. The addition of a Hard difficulty mode in this release brings a welcome level of challenge for veterans, but the standard Normal setting remains approachable for more casual players. Quests and exploration are rewarding, with hidden items and secrets scattered across the game’s 150 areas. However, the reliance on fetch quests and backtracking in certain sections can feel like padding rather than genuine engagement.

Visually, FANTASIAN Neo Dimension manages to impress. The combination of handmade dioramas and CG graphics creates an aesthetic that is both unique and stunning, especially in 4K resolution. The environments feel alive with detail, making exploration a visual treat. However, not all scenes fully support 4K, which can lead to a slight inconsistency in graphical fidelity. The music, composed by Nobuo Uematsu, is as expected from the legendary composer – a rich soundtrack that complements the game’s tone perfectly. The ability to switch to battle music from the Final Fantasy series is a delightful nod to fans of Sakaguchi’s earlier work as well.

The controls and interface are smooth and intuitive, ensuring a seamless experience whether navigating the intricate world or engaging in battles. However, some menu navigation feels dated compared to more streamlined modern RPGs, which might slightly frustrate if you’re accustomed to faster systems in other games.

Overall, FANTASIAN Neo Dimension is a worthy addition to the PlayStation 5’s RPG library, blending classic design philosophies with modern enhancements. While not without its flaws, the game’s heartfelt narrative, striking visuals, and engaging mechanics make it a standout experience, especially for those nostalgic for the golden era of JRPGs. Sakaguchi’s touch is evident throughout, solidifying FANTASIAN Neo Dimension as a love letter to fans of the genre and the game designer.

Score: 8.0/10
