My Little Universe review (PS5)

My Little Universe, developed by SayGames, has made its way to PlayStation 5 following a PC release in 2023, bringing its mix of exploration, resource gathering, and light combat to a new audience. What starts as a simple adventure quickly unfolds into an engaging gameplay loop of unlocking new areas, upgrading tools, and taking on increasingly tougher foes. While the game offers an enjoyable sense of progression and a relaxing atmosphere, some repetitive mechanics and pacing issues hold it back from true greatness.

The core of My Little Universe revolves around expanding your world piece by piece, using gathered resources to unlock new tiles and access fresh biomes. There’s a pleasant sense of discovery as you clear obstacles, mine materials, and venture into different environments, each with its own unique aesthetic. However, the process of unlocking land can sometimes feel grindy, requiring a significant amount of repetitive harvesting before meaningful progress is made. This is somewhat mitigated by the introduction of new tools and upgrades, but the pacing can still feel sluggish at times.

Combat plays a secondary role in the experience, but it adds just enough variety to keep things interesting. Players will face off against a mix of mythical creatures and alien foes, using a basic but effective set of weapons. While the combat is far from deep, it serves its purpose, offering light challenges that break up the gathering-focused gameplay. However, the enemy variety is somewhat limited, and encounters can start to feel predictable after a while. Fortunately, the addition of co-op multiplayer injects some extra fun, allowing up to three players to join in on the adventure, making resource collection and combat more engaging in the process.

Visually, My Little Universe embraces a minimalist yet colorful aesthetic that suits its laid-back tone. The environments, though simplistic, have a certain charm, and the world feels lively as new areas come to life with each expansion. The soundtrack also complements the experience well, offering a soothing backdrop that enhances the game’s relaxing nature. However, the lack of significant visual variety between biomes means that, after extended play sessions, the environments can start to blend together.

Controls are generally responsive, making the process of mining, chopping, and fighting intuitive, though there are occasional instances where movement can feel slightly imprecise, particularly when navigating tight spaces. Given the game’s casual nature, this isn’t a major issue, but it can lead to moments of frustration when trying to collect specific resources or engage in combat. The interface is also straightforward, keeping things accessible, which is fitting for the game’s intended audience.

Overall, My Little Universe offers a cozy and satisfying gameplay loop that will appeal to fans of casual exploration and resource management games. While the repetitive nature of resource gathering and occasional pacing issues can be drawbacks, the game’s charming presentation and multiplayer functionality make it a fun and engaging experience, especially in shorter bursts. For those looking for a relaxed yet rewarding adventure, it’s worth stepping into this little universe and seeing where the journey takes you.
