Dosa Divas review (PS5)

Outerloop Games’ Dosa Divas introduces a concept that immediately sets it apart from more traditional RPG fare, blending a vibrant cultural lens with a story about food, memory, and resistance against homogenized corporate control. Centered on sisters Samara and Amani, the narrative leans heavily into themes of reconnection – both personal and communal – as they traverse a world shaped by the creeping influence of a fast food empire. That thematic core proves to be one of the game’s strongest elements, delivering a story that feels heartfelt and distinct, even if its pacing occasionally falters and some emotional beats don’t land with the intended weight.

The writing shines most when it focuses on interpersonal relationships and cultural identity, weaving food traditions into both storytelling and gameplay in a way that feels organic rather than superficial. Dialogue often carries warmth and personality, and the world-building benefits from its commitment to representing diverse communities with care. However, the narrative can sometimes feel uneven, with tonal shifts that don’t always transition smoothly and a structure that occasionally undercuts its own momentum, particularly in the latter half of the game.

Combat in Dosa Divas builds on familiar turn-based foundations but introduces timing-based mechanics that reward player engagement. Attacks and defenses gain additional impact when inputs are timed correctly, adding a layer of interactivity that prevents encounters from becoming too passive. The flavor-based system – where abilities align with different taste profiles and enemy preferences – adds a strategic wrinkle that encourages experimentation, though it can take time before its full potential becomes apparent. While this system is inventive, it isn’t always perfectly balanced, and some encounters can feel either too forgiving or unexpectedly punishing depending on how well the mechanics click.

Outside of combat, the game broadens its scope through exploration and cooking systems that tie directly into its themes. Traversing the world in the customizable spirit-mech Goddess introduces light platforming elements, including traversal abilities like grappling and drilling, which add variety but can feel slightly imprecise in execution. Similarly, the cooking system – used to prepare meals that influence both narrative progression and combat buffs – is conceptually strong, reinforcing the game’s central ideas, but can become somewhat repetitive over time due to limited variation in interactions.

Control responsiveness overall is solid, particularly during combat where timing is critical, but the platforming segments occasionally expose minor stiffness in movement and camera behavior. These moments don’t derail the experience, but they do highlight a relative lack of polish compared to the more refined battle systems. The interface and progression systems are generally intuitive, though some players may find the pacing of upgrades and unlocks uneven, especially in the early hours.

Visually, Dosa Divas is striking, with a bold art direction that emphasizes color, texture, and cultural motifs. Character designs are expressive, environments are richly detailed, and the overall presentation reinforces the game’s identity at every turn. That said, technical performance on PlayStation 5 isn’t entirely flawless, with occasional frame pacing issues and minor bugs that disrupt immersion. The audio design complements the visuals well, featuring a soundtrack that blends traditional influences with modern sensibilities, though it can lack variety across extended play sessions.

Taken as a whole, Dosa Divas is a game that thrives on its individuality. Its fusion of narrative, mechanics, and cultural storytelling creates an experience that stands out in a crowded genre, even if some of its systems don’t fully realize their potential. The occasional pacing issues, mechanical inconsistencies, and technical hiccups hold it back from true greatness, but the sincerity and creativity at its core make it a compelling journey. For players willing to embrace its quirks, Dosa Divas offers a flavorful and memorable RPG that leaves a lasting impression.
